how common is it?
my doctor said at my next exam she will be testing for beta strep .. is that what it's called? where the mom doesn't show any symptoms but it could be fatal for the baby if born when mom has it.
how common is this? has anyone ever heard of a case where everything turned out ok?
ahhh, more things to worry about now ....

Is that the Strep B test? I think it is very common to be tested for it, and if you test positive, they just give you antibiotics through an IV when you deliver so the baby doesn't get it.

Re: how common is it?
Group B strep is not a big deal at all - I think I'm getting tested for it at my next exam. It's a bacteria that lives in the colon, and if you have it, it can be passed on to the baby at birth if no treatment is given. So what they'll do if you do have it is give you an anti-biotic so the baby will be safe.

Re: how common is it?
It's actually very common for women to have it. It's called being "colonized" -- where the bacteria live in the body but don't cause symptoms. But with childbirth, the baby can get sick from being exposed, so if you test positive they will give you the IV antibiotics during delivery. I >think< they say about 50% of women are colonized with it. Don't worry if your test comes back positive. Everything will be fine. The doctor just needs to know before you deliver so he can order the right medication for you.
