How are maternity clothes supposed to fit?
big and still have room? Or are they supposed to be more fitted to your shape. Most of my clothes are still a little roomy. I guess it's probably for the best so I can grow into them more. But right now some maternity shirts look kind of stupid on me. I have a little belly at 14 weeks but nothing like I will have. What did you do if you bought clothes earlier?

Re: How are maternity clothes supposed to fit?
I bought a few size small shirts for early on and 4's and 6's pants w/o the panel ( just elastic top)from old navy which have been great, but now I'm buying size medium shirts and 8's in pants with the panel or Demi panel and they are much more comfortable now. You will grow into everything !

Re: How are maternity clothes supposed to fit?
I wore the maternity pants earlier but tops I really either just got a bigger size or continued to wear my regular tops. It was more the pants that I needed the space in at first.

Re: How are maternity clothes supposed to fit?
JMO, but you want them to be a little roomy. You're definitely going to get bigger, and don't want to grow out of your new clothes in a few weeks.
eta: at 14 weeks, I was still able to get into some of non-maternity tops that had stretch in it or were a size bigger than normal.

Re: How are maternity clothes supposed to fit?
I bought a lot of maternity shirts in a stretchy/rouged material in the tummy area...that way it fits me nicely everywhere and my stomach can grow along and I'll still look good!

Re: How are maternity clothes supposed to fit?
mine are still kind of big and I am 18 weeks. I have shirts that I bought in a size smaller than the rest of my maternity clothes and they fit (the more fitted cotton ones) but the button down type shirts are still big on me, and most of my pants are big too.

Re: How are maternity clothes supposed to fit?
When I was PG with my son, I tried to buy clothes that would "grow" with me. That being said, there definitely were some shirts that fit better earlier in my PG and some that fit better later on.
I am now 18 weeks PG and there definitely are some maternity shirts that look fine (a little baggy) and some that are just too big for me to wear right now but know that they will be fine in a few weeks.
I am a big fan of layering for work, i.e. I really like the maternity cardigans with a shirt underneath. I feel like they can be worn for the whole PG.

Re: How are maternity clothes supposed to fit?
I have the most trouble with pants. I have several pairs of maternity jeans and hate them all. The best pair I got, I bought last week at JC Penney's. But for the most part, maternity jeans just stink. They fall down from the weight of the jeans and the lack of support at the time.
The best pants I've found are the yoga pants at old navy. I have them in gray and black. They go all the way to the floor (not capris) and with a maternity top on, just look like nice work pants. They're super comfy and have fit me for a few months now. Even now with my belly huge (I'm 30 weeks), these pants fit great. I used to fold the top down a little when I was smaller, but now the top just fits nicely over my belly. They're super comfy, don't fall down, and feel "normal" to wear.
I also got two pairs of floor-length black leggings from old navy that I wear often with maternity tops.
Tops itself aren't too bad. Some that I've had for a while are definitely starting to fit more snugly, but they're comfortable. I wore a size 12 before I got PG, and I wear a large in pretty much all maternity clothes, which is right on track.
The thing I've had the most trouble with is actually underwear. I ended up buying a few packs of bikini briefs in L from motherhood maternity. They don't fit over my belly, but they're comfy enough under it.
Really, I feel like maternity clothes should just fit in a way that you're comfortable in them. They're supposed to be flexible (to the point that you can wear them early on, at the end, and even after you give birth) so you get a lot of use out of them. I really don't think there's a "right" or "wrong" way to dress when you're PG.

Re: How are maternity clothes supposed to fit?
i grew just like you kristin... and it was MUCH easier to just wear reg clothes just a size bigger.. i didnt really start wearing maternity shirts till i was about 29-30 weeks pregnant and even at that most of my shirts were NON maternity just a size or 2 bigger just my tshirts were maternity to be long enough. as far as pants.. i wore my pre preggo pants till i was 22 weeks pregnant then got just the elastic waste ones and then around the same time 28 weeks or so i wore full pannel pants. and because i had a c section i wore them well after the baby was born also because my stomach was extremely sensitive!! try just getting a size bigger it was MUCH MUCH more flattering!

lol, i agree with the pp. I just got regular clothes but in larger sizes. I finally caved and bought maternity pants at 27 wks and they fit "normally" now.

Re: How are maternity clothes supposed to fit?
I was just thinking about this. I'm wearing a new pair of maternity pants and there's so much room in here but it's def more comfortable than my regular pants. I figure I'll grow into these, for now they're just a little big because I don't have much of a bump yet.
I haven't even started wearing maternity tops yet, my regular tops are still fine for now.

Maternity shirts are just as comfy! I had to start wearing them because I do have a bump and I don't want to start stretching out my normal clothes. It's just annoying because everything is on the big side. But its definitely better than wearing my pre pregnancy jeans. I couldn't do it comfortably anymore!

Re: How are maternity clothes supposed to fit?
A g/f of mine suggested Target to buy some of the clothes and buy them to fit. Like don't necessarily buy the maternity ones in the first Tri and opt for a large in the clearance section.
Some of the stuff to my surprise is really not that bad in that store, and bc it is cheap enough you don't feel like you have to buy real big roomy pregnancy clothing so that you have to 'grow into it' Therefore you can buy in phases.

Re: How are maternity clothes supposed to fit?
I just said the other day that I thought maternity jeans were over rated. At 16 weeks with a small belly, I find myself CONSTANTLY pulling them up. I keep telling myself I am going to grow into them...

shirts are going to take time to fit into. I felt ridiculous in them until i really got a belly, I would say around 22-24 weeks

Re: How are maternity clothes supposed to fit?
I got lucky and a friend of mine lent me a bunch of her stuff. Only the shirts fit me, but they are good to get me through the beginning...I just put a big order in at Motherhood.com for stuff that will be in my size when I really get up there. Maternity pants look a bit weird on me, but they are so comfy that I don't even care!!
