House Hunting Survey
So, DH and I have lived very comfortably in a very nice apartment complex for a couple of years now. All the while we have kept our eyes peeled for a house, but we never really were too serious b/c we didnt "have to" move. Our lease is up in October and we do not want to re-sign for another year b/c the rent is pretty steep and we are planning on starting a family soon. So we are now a bit more active in our house hunting but DH is a real "PITA" when it comes to all of this b/c he is always worried that there might be a better deal out there and it takes him FOREVER to make a decison about something Me, on the other hand, I jump into things WAY too fast so it's pretty safe to say that so far house-hunting has been less than thrilling for the both of us .
Anyhow, my question is: How long would you say it took you to finally find your house and approximately how many houses did you go to look at? I'd also love to hear any tips that you might want to offer.
TIA

Re: House Hunting Survey
i think we looked for about a year in a whole bunch of different locations, some were even out of state. but we were when the market was crazy high.
we were not in a rush... i think i must of looked at about 50-75 in total. i went to a bunch without DH. DH looked at about 20.

Re: House Hunting Survey
2 years and hundreds of houses, but during that time we narrowed our search down to one neighborhood and one school district, so we started more broadly.

Re: House Hunting Survey
We looked at about 5 houses total, but we were very active of weeding out houses on mlsli.com first. Plus my dh is a realtor and mortgage broker so I had someone who knew what he was doing.
Good luck

Re: House Hunting Survey
We started in August and found our house in November. There were 3 other houses we seriously considered. We looked at a total of maybe 30 houses.

Re: House Hunting Survey
we've always kept our eyes open for a potential house but only got really serious about it in march or april of this year. we JUST went into contract this past week so about 4-5 months of constant looking and that was about 40-50 houses.

Re: House Hunting Survey
we started looking in march and out of maybe 60 houses we saw, we only made an offer on three houses. we went to contract in the beginning of june. we won't close until september b/c we are getting an FHA loan and the sellers need to buy a home as well.

Re: House Hunting Survey
7-8 months i would say around 70 houses. Our issue was we don't have much money, we weren't very picky just we didn't want to buy a house that was falling a part. So it has taken longer for us.

Re: House Hunting Survey
Started in Jan, saw our house in April but they rejected our bid and didn't come back to us until late May. We bid on 4 houses, almost went to contract on one in Feb but backed out. We saw at least 50 houses.

Re: House Hunting Survey
Thanks ladies. I guess I have my work cut out for me. DH and I are going to see a couple of houses today. My problem is that I have no patience and I will probably think every house I see is "the one"
Wish me luck!

Re: House Hunting Survey
First we started looking at open houses. We were semi-serious at that point. We did that off and on for about a year or so.
We also signed up on MLS to have emails with our specifications sent to us.
Then in September/October of '07 we became more serious and I started contacting REA of some of the houses that we really liked. We found our house in the middle of October.
We had seen a lot of crap out there. When I saw this house I just knew it was "the ONE".
Don't settle...there are so many houses out there!!

Re: House Hunting Survey
We started in April, found our house in June, closed in Sept.
ETA: We did most of our reseach online and only looked at a handful of houses. We didn't even bother looking if the house was in a neighborhood that we didnt like.
