Hosting your own baby shower?

Why is this making me sad?

Im anticipating that I will be "hosting" (planning etc) my own baby shower. My mom is not medically in a place to do anything, my sister doesnt care about these things, and my in laws might feel funny, like its not their place. So I am forseeing that its all going to be me. WHich I am fine with, I completely dont mind but on the other hand its making me a little sad that on my invitation, I wont have a line saying "Hosted by grandma's and aunties...."

Re: Hosting your own baby shower?

I helped plan mine, and was happy to be involved in picking out the favors, etc. But, TBH, I'd try to have people RSVP to someone else. It's one thing to help plan, and it's another to BE the host, KWIM? Good luck! Chat Icon

maybe do a small co-ed one so your hubby could help.

Re: Hosting your own baby shower?

You can always write "hosted by: the family of xxxxx"

I am sorry. I am in similar situation. I am helping out with some of mine too. I would talk to your sisters or friends and tell them that you need the help and see if they can help.

wanted to give you Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon as much as my mom wanted to do it, she has no clue about what to do.. and she was asking coworkers about things and i was like forget it.. i rolled up sleeves and did my own invites, bought the favors, and the games.. my mom ordered the food and that's about it. I asked a friend to do the games for me.. showers are not cultural thing, and I don't have any sisters and my SIL could careless.. in fact she'd happy if there was no shower so the attention won't be diverted from her.. but seriously it doesn't matter.. everyone near and dear to me is coming, and regardless of who planned it, it will be great.. I paid for mine...but didn't host it. My dh did a lot also. No one was able to pay for the type of shower I wanted, so I did. I also bought a lot of the things I wanted for it. Don't be upset. Ull have a great day, I did!

Ps...ill host, u pay. I can throw one good party!

How about making up a temporary gmail account and have the RSVP to:

This is what we did for my shower. My sister created a new email that was just for the shower. We both were able to check it since I was very involved in the shower.

I think you should have your DH talk with his family and let them know that they should help out and be the "hosts". They aren't overstepping anything and would be helping you guys out.

I'm sorry that you are feeling down about this, I hope it works out.

Re: Hosting your own baby shower?

I hosted my own shower. I even had it in my house! My mom passed away years ago and my sister was unemployed and living miles away, but I wanted a shower. So why not, right? My father paid for it, but I planned every detail, made the invitations, shopped for the decorations and the favors, etc. DH's brother and his girlfriend, plus my sister, came over the night before and hung up all the decorations and helped set up the tables. I'd really recommend that you do that too. I had my shower at 36w and was in no shape to get up on a ladder and hang streamers! Plus, I was super stressed and tired and just could not do all the work that was required the day before.

So my advice: host the shower and have fun with it, but invite some friends or cousins or something to sleep over the night before and help you with the physical work of it.

Re: Hosting your own baby shower?

sorry to crash, but my DH paid for my shower (so essentially I paid for it too). He really wanted me to have one and my parents are Jewish and my IL didn't have the money. My "lovely" sister felt since she did my bridal shower she couldn't afford a baby shower. My DH used my SIL as the RSVP and kept the place and day a secret from me. My SIL helped out with some details (invites, favors). but no one planned games b/c my DH didn't know to ask anyone (and he didn't want me having any part of the planning so I didn't think to mention it). Someone should have asked him though, instead of everyone assuming someone else was going to be in charge of it.
Honestly I was uncomfortable with it at first but got over it as everyone i knew had showers. I did feel like since my DH was paying for it, more people (girlfriends and female family members) should have stepped up to help him though.

Re: Hosting your own baby shower?

we are paying for at least half my shower- honestly I am fine with it, I would rather it not be a surprise and my mom really isn't in the best of health and not really into throwing parties, my sister is out of state so it is hard for her to do every detail. DH and I booked the restaurant and paid the deposit, I am having the RSVP's go to my sister and I may act a little suprised- I think some people expect you to be surprised.

Re: Hosting your own baby shower?

i actually wanted to host my own since i felt really awkward about having my mom or best friend shell out all that money towards one (and i don't really like showers anyway)
So, i suggested having mine at my house to keep it casual and keep the costs down

my bf still organized it by sending out the invites (we did an evite, which i was included on so could see who responded if i wanted), and then she and i planned the menu together and did all the prep together (with help from my mom).
It was actually a lot of fun and it ensured that the shower was as low key as i had wanted it to be.

Try to think of it that way - you get more control over it and will end up with what you want Chat Icon
In the end, the sentiments of the guests will still be the same Chat Icon

Hubby and I are hosting our shower. We wanted a HUGE celebration, inviting entire familes, with a DJ....I could never expect anyone to pay for something like this for us but it's what I wanted.

We selected the location, the date and are paying. We chose our invitations, I listed my sister as the RSVP, she's VERY happy to help but having just been laid off is not in any position to host.

Don't feel bad at all! I'm sure someone can handle the RSVP's and can do decor ect. Just because you pay doesn't mean that there wont be surprises and you know what....people are going to come and celebrate this VERY exciting new time in your life.

Chin up and plan your amazing party!Chat Icon

Glad it made you feel better! I have to tell you, our shower is coming up and everytime I check the registry (probably hormones too), I start crying. I am so SOOOO moved by the generosity of people. Despite the tough economic times, people are buying gifts for our little boy. This truly makes me so grateful. Enjoy your shower- keep us posted!
