Hosting a holiday dinner - WWYD?

Just wondering what the majority would do in this situation.

You host a holiday at your house.. One of your guests (family member) is a vegetarian. Your main dish is meat. Do you make something in addition to your main dish for the vegetarian to eat like a pasta or seafood? Or do you just let the vegetarian pick on the sides during dinner?

(For the purpose of this Post, the vegetarian eats fish lol)

To answer my own question, if I am welcoming someone into my house for dinner, I want everyone to have a dinner they enjoy so I would make something special for the vegetarian to eat.

Yes, I would make a separate dish for them.

Same if they were vegan or a raw foodist or anything else.

If I'm hosting, I'm a host for everyone.

Yes I'd make another dish that was vegetarian but that everyone could enjoy.

Re: Hosting a holiday dinner - WWYD?

Holiday meals in my family are anywhere between 5-7 courses, with only one or two meat dishes. There would still be PLENTY of food for a vegetarian to eat. For instance on Christmas, we start with non-meat apps, and have a non-meat pasta course. Then there's some sort of a roast with all veggie and starchy sides. So I wouldn't have to make anything separate because they could still have the pasta, apps, sides, etc.

I would never invite someone and not provide a meal for them - so yes if I had someone come that was a vegetarian I would ask them what they would like to eat and make that. My second cousin was vegan for a while. We would always offer to make her something but she was very strict so she would bring her own meals when she would come for holidays. But other relatives we usually just make them something else.

As a fish eating veg myself, I always make something I can eatChat Icon Chat Icon

I'm always very appreciative of people who make a pasta or something 'special' for me .
But what usually ends up happening is people make salad and assume that is my main. I've also had people say to me 'there's plenty of veg side dishes for you to eat'. When I know I'm going to those people's homes I eat in advance.

Re: Hosting a holiday dinner - WWYD?

I don't host holiday dinners, which I guess are generally meat, but if we have guests over and one of them is a vegetarian, I would definitely consider just making a vegetarian dish, like lasagna.

I AM the vegetarian and it is ALWAYS appreciated!!!! When I host, we have plenty of meat and non meat dishes. This goes for appetizers AND the main course.

Re: Hosting a holiday dinner - WWYD?

Yes, I would make a dish for them but I will ask them what they eat/don't eat first. Some vegetarians don't eat seafood/fish/butter

Be sure not to use those ingredients (or chicken broth) when cooking their meal.

Re: Hosting a holiday dinner - WWYD?

I am a vegetarian, and although I can pick at side dishes it is a great gesture when someone has something for me to eat (just not lasagna, which is the go to dish that meat eaters make for veggies..lol) FM me if you need any recipes. It's nice of you to be concerned for your guest

Yes - I definitely would!

It's a little different, but I have a dairy/cheese allergy so I've been lucky in that someone always does this for me if the main course is something that I can't eat. It doesn't sound too restrictive, but I can't eat anything with cheese, milk (like mashed potatoes) or sour cream and it's harder than you'd think. I always try to provide the same courtesy to others. Veg, gluten-free, whatever Chat Icon

Re: Hosting a holiday dinner - WWYD?

There would be a vegetarian main dish that would make everyone happy in addition to the meat mains.

I think just asking them to pick on sides and apps is fine and they can probably fill up but I think as the hostess you should provide something more substantial.

I would ask the vegetarian what they eat.

In this case fish is an excellent option.

yes....
as it is, DH's brother does not like lamb and is REALLY picky, his GF doesn't like lamb and is lactose intolerant, his father is picky (no veggies, no green herbs) and his mother is diabetic and hates anything fattening. Anytime is family comes for dinner I have to make something for everyone practically....

I was gonna make steak for easter with the lamb, but now they are not coming so I am off the hook!

Re: Hosting a holiday dinner - WWYD?

I would do a pasta or a fish. Probably a pasta since other guests will be likely to take some of that as well - maybe a veggie lasagna or baked cheese ravioli. Somthing like that.

We always make a dish that everyone, including vegetarians can eat - baked ziti, tortellini, eggplant...

Re: Hosting a holiday dinner - WWYD?

As a vegetarian, it's always appreciated BUT I don't expect people to go out of their way...there's always some things that I can eat.

When we host, it's all vegetarian. It's against our ethical beliefs to eat animals, and I have no idea how to cook meat, nor am I willing to learn. HOWEVER, people never notice the lack of meat. In fact, just this weekend a friend said to me "wait, so there was no meat at your wedding at all?!" Nope! Chat Icon

Re: Hosting a holiday dinner - WWYD?

I would ask the person what they want.

I used to be a vegetarian, and generally the hostess would make a fish dish for me without asking me in advance if I wanted it. Generally, these were not dishes I wanted to eat, but felt obligated since she went to the extra trouble to prepare it. I was generally fine with eating all the sides on holidays, since in my family, there is usually plenty non-meat choices.

Depending on who is hosting, sometimes the appetizers are so good, I am not that hungry by the time dinner arrives and don't want the host/hostess to go to any extra trouble.

Re: Hosting a holiday dinner - WWYD?

if there are enough meat-free sides (mac and cheese, scallped potatoes, salad, rolls etc) then i think that is more than sufficient
