Hospital Help!

Unfortunately, due to insurance issues, it looks like I may have to switch midwives. I live in Nassau County, but it looks like I'm going to have to travel to Suffolk.

I have one option that delivers at Huntington Hospital. The other practice I'm considering is Stony Brook Midwives, but they obviously deliver at Stony Brook. Huntington is about 35 mins from me & Stony Brook is about 45. At this point, I'm trying to decide which hospital is better for L&D (specifically natural birth & VBAC friendly), but I have no experience with either.

I would really appreciate any info or input you have! Is anyone else travelling that far to their hospital?

Re: Hospital Help!

stony brooker here.....

all I can say is that stony brook midwives have a WONDERFUL reputation (my friend swears by them... as do many others I've spoken to),

stony brook hospital is pretty good... the one drawback is that it is occassionally understaffed as far as nurses go (so you'll be waiting if you call them for something not urgent), but they have a first rate NICU, all the latest equipment, some very smart physicians... so if the poop hits the fan and there's an emergency, there is no where else I'd rather be.... I'll risk the chance of 'suffering' while waiting for ice chips in my room if I must...

Oh, and they are opening a new pavillion in a few months that is supposedly gorgeous....even in the older wing, every room is private Chat Icon

I'm with an OB, not the midwives group, but I can tell you that my limited interactions with the SB hospital maternity wing (such as lactation classes etc...) have all been very good.

Re: Hospital Help!

I am using the Stony Brook midwives. They are awesome! I am about 10 minutes from Stony Brook now, but when they delivered my son, I lived almost 45 minutes away. I was worried about the distance, but it all worked out. I do not know anything about Huntington hospital, but I do know that anytime we have been to Stony Brook, I have not had a problem, L&D was great, and they have a top notch NICU.
