With the new person they put in charge of education here, it doesn't seem likely for us.

NY has a Governor that is for Common Core, so unfortunately it won't change things here.

Sadly this is true, but God I hope parents and educators continue to make noise until we can't be ignored anymore. CC is simply not working!

If I understand correctly, this doesn't necessarily have any impact on excessive testing, does it? In fact, the article says "He'll also reaffirm his commitment to testing as a means of measuring student learning." This just means that NJ will have different standards, but testing will continue... just to different standards?

Good question. Yes, CC and the tests are two separate issues really. Testing is not the problem. Unfair, developmentally inappropriate testing is the problem. Ugh, education is a sh!tshow right now!

Total s***show! Christie also said, "It is time to have standards that are even higher." Is people's problem with Common Core that the standards aren't high enough?? Because unless that's the problem, I'm not sure how this helps. I hope this does help the kids in NJ, but it's not clear to me at all yet that this is an actual improvement.

The common core standards the, selves aren't bad. They are a great guide for teachers. It's the implementation and testing that's an issue. My 8 th grade ELA standards have helped me write an outstanding curriculum this year

Nobody understands this. The standards say what to teach, not how to teach it, it's a very well written document. It's Pearson and they way they want the material presented that's the problem. It's the same Math, for example, just being taught in some new weird way. So, the math is it the problem just the way we are forced to teach it.

As a teacher I can't like this enough, I am a reading teacher and I always say the reading standards are fine it's the implementation and the materials they expect us to use kids have essentially jumped two grade levels in the books they are expected to read content is not always appropriate either. I won't touch math since I don't teach it but I know that's a nightmare too
Pearson has a monopoly on our education system right now and something needs to be done about this, I don't understand how it's legal

I don't have a horse in this race. I'm not a teacher, I'm not a parent. So some will probably immediately discount my opinion. But anyway..

From what I've seen from the 'new way to teach math' makes it feel like more real life.

My sister was very upset that my niece, at that point maybe in 4th grade got math homework, and it was written out paragraphs and not just a list of numbers and functions. I looked at the worksheet and thought it was a good exercise. Maybe because I think that part of mathematics is converting a life situation to the proper formula, and then solving.

When you compare the price of a pot at BBB and Target, one is a low price with a 10% discount and one is a higher price with a 30% discount, there is no magic fairy that drops from the sky and says "solve this math problem to find what is cheapest." Or the standard which is faster the car/train going different MPHs. You need to convert the real life problem to the formula, then apply the mechanics.

So to me, it feels like they are teaching/training children earlier in their academic career (at least earlier than I was, many years ago) to be able to become problem solvers instead of just applying rote rules.

I can't find any fault in that. But then again, what do I know. Chat Icon

I agree a good word problem is fine, it's more real life, but it's the way they are now forced to solve it, if u can do it in your head or in a different manner than what's taught you get points taken off its almost like it's not about getting the right answer but doing 10 steps their way when you could do the same thing in 2 steps

Oh for crissakes..... I am so effing TIRED of these stupid "examples" of "Common Core Math".

All the above picture shows is another way to decompose the number 46. We are not FORCING students to add this way. Its teaching students that numbers can be put together and taken apart many different ways- something that would have been super helpful to a visual learner like I was back in the 80s. Kids are still learning math facts, but they're also learning how to break down numbers in different ways.

I am college educated with math always being my weak suite (I have little to no left brain) and my children are dead if I have to be the one to teach them this.

I am not at school age yet but I just don't get why it was changed at all. What was wrong with the typical old way?

I have my hands covering my eyes and I hope by the time I have to deal with it it will magically go away.

The thing I really like about the new way math is taught is that it helps kids do mental math. The method on the left was just a memorized set of steps ("then carry the one...") with no understanding of the relationship between numbers. It is pure, blind, unthinking calculation.

The way on the right is how I only started to do mental math as an adult...when I FINALLY realized that I should break down numbers into easily rearranged parts...I could suddenly do everything in my head. I was two years ahead in math in middle school and high school, and I honestly could not do mental math until I inadvertantly taught myself Common Core methods after leaving school! Chat Icon

The problem is when the method on the right is taught as a set of steps and mere calculation. THEN it seems ridiculously and unnecessarily long and complicated. But it's actually the more intuitive way and helps you really understand equations.

I have no problem with the Common Core standards. TI agree with others that it's the implementation, over-testing, inappropriate testing, and Pearson/ETS/etc. ineptitude that is the problem.

I agree too- but I won't dare take part in conversations on Facebook or elsewhere because if you don't hate CC then you're a moron, which is sad.

I taught for a long time and had CC training and then did a lot of work with the standards as an independent contractor. I have not found them to be radically different from what NYS had. Initially I was not happy because I felt literature was taking a back seat- but the reality is, kids need to be able to read informational text to do well in college and careers. Even the reading lists CC suggested were reasonable- it's the publishers and districts that have been out of control. The roll out has been a disaster. And the testing is ridiculous.

As for Christie- I admit I do not like him and I am cynical, so I think this has to do with getting people on his side post-Bridgegate and he wants to position himself better for a Presidential run. CC is a national issue and this is going to get him a lot of attention.
