Homeowners Insurance in Suffolk

For those of you who recently bought a house or are in the process of buying a house in Suffolk County, did you have trouble getting Homeowners Insurance?

My husband just called Geico and State Farm and was told that they no longer do homeowners insurance for Suffolk County. They recommended that we try to go with a smaller/more local company for homeowners.

Did anyone else have this problem?

We have Allstate and I know they longer write policies.
But I thought StateFarm was one that still did.
Sorry you're having a difficult time with this.
Good Luck!

We are with Hanover. They (as most) write on a case by case situation. We are located in the middle of the island and transferred our auto there too. We also wrote an umbrella with them.

I closed last April and we have Kemper--we transferred all our insurance (car, home umbrella and jewlery rider) to them. I would call the local agents in the town you are moving to because they might be able to get you the best rate.

I'm in West Babylon, but not near the water. We are less than a 1/2 mile from Sunrise.

My co-worker called his State Farm agent yesterday and he said that they are not suppose to write any new policy for Suffolk homeowners, but that he would do it. So he gave me a quote yesterday.

Thats very strange... I remember there was someone a few weeks ago who also said they were having issues getting a quote from state farm.
Maybe it is varying from agent to agent?
When I called they told me that state farm does not consider LI a hurricane risk, and then when I went to the office, they told me the hurrican deductible was less than most of the other companies because of this.. and this was only a few weeks ago..

we were sent a non-renewal from our old co & just signed with state farm. I'm a couple of miles away from the sound & across the street from a lake.
State farm is a whopping $700 less than our old coChat Icon
We did not switch our cars, we happen to have one small life ins policy w/state farm that DH has had for years.
I'm SOOO glad they dropped usChat Icon

if they are close to the water, insurance companies are worried they would have to pay too much $$$$ out if a hurricane hits LI. Reason many co. are no longer insuring on LI. Too much fear that what Katrina did to New Orleans could happen to LI.
