Homemade baby food questions
I'm starting bananas tonight. I was planning on giving him half of a banana. Is that too much? DS has no problem finishing 1 tablespoon of rice cereal mixed with 2 tablespoons of BM.
If I only use half of a banana, can I leave the rest in the skin and put it in the refrigerator to use tomorrow or do you think it will get brown and mushy?
If you make a batch of bananas, does it freeze well? Is there anything you can do to prevent the bananas from getting brown?
I also plan on mashing avocados soon. Do avocados freeze well? What, if anything, do you do to prevent them from getting brown?
If you freeze fruits and vegetables in 1 oz cubes, how many cubes do you give to DC per meal?
Are there any fruits and vegetables that do not freeze well?

Re: Homemade baby food questions
from what i understand, one doesn't want to refreeze thawed items, but that rule doesn't apply to things like frozen peas .
i don't know the banana question answer so what i've been doing is mashing some with cereal and polishing off the rest myself, i don't freeze them. i would do the same with avocados...
other fruits i freeze huge batches. this morning DD had cereal with 4 cubes of defrosted apples (i mostly mixed the two together, leaving a little straight apple on the side). it depends on her appetite, sometimes she'll eat more, sometimes less...
you just have to experiment, see what he likes and what he's in the mood to eat

Re: Homemade baby food questions
We puree everything, including bananas, then freeze into cubes. In an ice cube tray, one cube is about 1oz. In the baby cubes, one cube is 2oz.

DD is a peanut and eats very little at once, so no advice on portion size.
If I only use half of a banana, can I leave the rest in the skin and put it in the refrigerator to use tomorrow or do you think it will get brown and mushy? If you put it in the fridge it will turn brown. I usually leave the unused portion in the skin and put it in a Ziploc bag on the counter. Only the front part gets a little brown.
If you make a batch of bananas, does it freeze well? Is there anything you can do to prevent the bananas from getting brown? I also plan on mashing avocados soon. Do avocados freeze well? What, if anything, do you do to prevent them from getting brown? If you freeze the food right away it will not really get brown but once you thaw, it may. Anytime I refrigerate any unused portion of avacado, I cover it with saran wrap completely touching the avacado. That way the avacado does not oxidize and turn brown.
If you freeze fruits and vegetables in 1 oz cubes, how many cubes do you give to DC per meal?
Are there any fruits and vegetables that do not freeze well?

I found that banana and avocado did not store well. I didn't do big batches of thsoe. The banana should be ok for tomorrow if you keep it in the skin - on the counter will be fine, or the fridge. Avocado - I always just ate the rest! There were certain fruits I found were easier to buy than make myself. Prunes were another. They don't freeze solid.

Re: Homemade baby food questions
leave the pit in with the avocado - it'll keep it from getting too brown.
