I am watching NBC news and they just stated that homelessness is at its highest in NY!

Yes- even people making decent salaries can't even afford to live here- I can't imagine what it is like for those who truly do not have . . .

I believe it. Even when I lived in Queens, there were a few homeless people who'd walk around and ask for money.

I believe it. We had friends visiting from England 2 weeks ago and we went to the Statue of Liberty. I was shocked by the number of homeless people hanging out in Battery Park. It was sad.

I wonder if, in the effort to shore up the city's debt, Bloomberg cut funding to homeless shelters and similar programs? I have no idea- but I wonder why the rise in homelessness?

I was reading a NY Times article about food pantries and charity kitchens in the city just the other day. The volunteers noticed that an increasing number of people who came had fulltime jobs. Their jobs don't pay a "living wage"- enough to cover rent, utilities, etc. Food is one area where they can cut costs... I'm sure that contribues.
