Home improvement or not?
We have two full baths in our home - but one of the bathrooms has a shower in the tub. The shower didn't work and the tub part didn't work - both would just trickle and so we needed to get our shower body replaced. Which included ripping out tile to do the job replacing the shower body and shower/tub knobs.
Is that considered an improvement or just a regular job since there would not have been a working shower/tub had the work not been done.

Re: Home improvement or not?
I would say the job was regular since it needed to be done to have it working, but you could add that the tile was updated, etc. as a bonus (not sure of the context for this).

Re: Home improvement or not?
It depends on who is asking.
You're making a home improvement because you are updating the faucets and tile.
It's a repair because you are replacing something that wasn't working.
If you want to promote the repair, I think you can legitimately call it an upgrade. I also think that if you want to downplay the repair, you can just call it a repair.

Thanks we were just curious - our plumber told us it was a home improvement but the tile guy refused to say that it was and insisted that the only way to say it was an improvement was if there was NO shower previously.

Re: Home improvement or not?
Why does it make a differenence?
Are you asking if you can deduct a bathroom remodel on your taxes? The answer is no.

No I have no intention of doing that - it was to settle a discussion we were having with someone.

Re: Home improvement or not?
It's not really a home "improvement" except that you got new tile to repair it. But since you cannot get the old tile the new tile is just to fix the repair.
Just like if you had puched a hole in the wall and bought new drywall to fix it.
So to me it's just a regular job/repair.
