Home births?

OK- First I am not pregnant , or thinking about it in
the near future, I was just wondering.

I have a co-worker who had all 3 of her babies at home. Intentionally.

I was wondering how common that is.

Is anyone planning a home birth? Or giving birth someplece other than a hospital?

And if you already have kids, did anyone give birth outside of a hospital unavoidably?

Re: Home births?

A girl I went to school with had all 6 of hers at home. She had a problem delivering the last one. Luckily, the ambulance got there in time or neither of them would have made it.

Ron & Liz had a child at home. You could FM them for more info if you wanted.

I think that MomAgain had one at home that wasn't planned, she couldn't get to the hospital fast enough.

I didn't have a real questions, I was just wondering how commoni it was, b/c I only knew that one person & everybody here thought she was nuts.

Fortunately, she had quick labors with no complications.

Wow--6! I'm glad she & the baby are ok!

The woman I know, went early & had such a short labor with her 1st, that they don't think they could have gotten to the hospital in time anyway, so they were glad they were prepared to have him at home.

Gotcha. I don't think it's all that common here, more so in other parts of the country. I don't think we even have birthing centers around here if you wanted an alternative to a hospital birth, which is a shame. Not for me, but the option should be there IMO.

See, I'm a little surprised at that. I remember hearing a few years ago about movement in that direction--about birthing centers & water births & all that, but I don't know anyone else who has done that. It is interesting that it may be a regional thing.

Re: Home births?

since there are NO birthing centers on LI and only one awful water birth place (Nassua Univ. Medical Center) home birth is often a women's only choice to have a natural birth on LI.
I would NOT say it is common at all on LI, but it is around. It can be very safe if planned properly.

I actually looked it up & found only 3 birthing centers in NYS. 1 in the Bronx, 1 in Brooklyn & 1 upstate. I wonder if it is an insurance issue or a cultiural thing?
There are a lot on Florida & Texas, and more than I would have expected, in Alaska.

Yup! Jonathan was born at home by fire light. All planned! He was born in front of the fireplace with a roaring fire in January. Same place he was conceived! Chat Icon It was an awesome experience.

Re: Home births?

I don't plan on it, but I happen to be watching A Baby Story, which I DVR'd from today and she is doing home birth and she is having complications and has to be rushed to the hospital. I just think it is so risky, I wouldn't take the risk.

I dont know of anyone that had a home birth or of any birthing centers but I do know that Winthrop has tubs if women are using midwifes and choose to do a water birth.

I do think about home birth has a great option for many women, but the culture on LI is very pro-OB.

Re: Home births?

I know many women who are steered away from VBACs are leaning toward home births in order to have a VBAC...
(not meant to start a VBAC debate) Ive read this somewhere....

and also women that want water births, etc. that are not offered in hospitals...

Actually there is one in brooklyn (which might as well be NYC for most) - I saw it recently when I had to do an interview in the neighborhood. It was also on TCL baby story I saw back maybe in the fall.

Re: Home births?

Doesn't Stony Brook have a birthing center? I could have sworn that was why my cousins had their babies up there.

Rachee posted that home births are very popular in the UK.

Personally, I wouldn't opt for it. I wanted medical staff on call for delivery. Way too many complications for me to handle.

There is a birthing center in St. Luke's Roosevelt Hospital in Manhattan.

Re: Home births?

I don't know anyone personally that has had a home birth here, but they seem to be extremely prevalent on that TLC A Baby Story show so I wonder if there are more places in NJ that provide for it since you only found 3 in NY.
