Home Alarms
The house we are buying has an alarm system already installed but it looks ancient....has tape on all the window ect. i was just wondering how much I'm looking at to have it re-done and then what the monthly charge is. Thanks.

Re: Home Alarms
It really depends on what you want in the new system. We have the old system like that and had 5 companies (including our current one) give us estimates to upgrade to a wireless system. They ranged from free install and $25ish a month with a 5 year contract to almost $2000 install, $36 a month and a 2 year contract. And what was included in each was similar but not exactly the same.
ETA: You definatley want to replace the tape. We just recently found out it's lead tape.

Which were the companies with free installation and $25 a month.....that sounds much better than 2k to install .....What did you do about taking the tape off....it's so ugly looking.

We haven't taken it off yet b/c we still use that system. They will remove it when they come to upgrade.
The only one with free install had the least amount of things included, so you really need to call around and make sure you are getting what you think you need. DH was adamant that we keep the glass break sensors on all the windows, so that gets expensive.
We got estimates from: APS (free install) Brinks (the most expensive for us) General Security ADT (this was our second choice, but I get a deal through my dad's affiliation with the military) Lowitt (they are our current provider and who we are staying with since we got everything we wanted and we felt the install price was reasonable)

Re: Home Alarms
we went with checkmate and they were great. we just got it done. 300 to install and 26 a month. i didn't like the slomins guy at all. he creeped me out. i went for the pay install because i wanted to make sure it would be wire free.
