Holy Swelling

Almost 37 weeks and the swelling just began! It started on Saturday with my engagement ring no longer fitting (luckily my wedding band is .5 size bigger and still fits). And as of yesterday my feet and ankles have swollen! I feel so disgusting and uncomfortable!!

Is there anything I can do to help this? Just wearing socks is so uncomfortable!

Marie you have to keep drinking more water. Even more than you usually do. Believe it or not, the more water you drink will help flush out the toxins which cause the swelling. And as soon as you get home, put your feet up. My DH has been so good about picking up the dinner slack the last couple of weeks since my ankle and foot swelling started. As soon as i walk in the door he asks to see my ankles and then he orders me to the couch to put my feet up and brings me water. It's great to be waited on I have to say, but I feel kinda guilty sometimes, but he's right so I don't argue. Chat Icon Funny you say about your ring, today was the first day I couldn't put it on. I was really sad. Chat Icon

Ugh, this is me!!! Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon
My eternity band could no longer fit, but I managed to squeeze my engagement ring on. My ankles and feet have swelled up to disgusting porportions, especially the right leg for some reasonChat Icon
I find that elevating them and foot rubs from DH helps Chat Icon

Re: Holy Swelling

I feel your pain. I started swelling when I was pregnant at about 34 weeks. I put on about 40 lbs of water weight in about 4 weeks. It was INSANE!! There is NOTHING you can do.......I tried everything. I also had GD so I was already drinking a lot of water and eating great but nothing I did stopped the swelling. The only good news was I lost every pound of the water weight and the pregnancy weight in the first three weeks I was home from the hospital. I lost a grand total of 65 lbs. in 3 weeks!!! You're almost at the end, hang in there. Feel better, I know it stinks!! Chat Icon

I'd call your OB, not to scare you but I was swelling at that point and it was the beginning of preeclampsia. I was induced at 39 weeks b/c of itChat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: Holy Swelling

Stay off your feet as much as possible. Try to keep them elevated above your heart. Drink a lot of water and try to avoid salty foods. You're at the end, but if you really want, you can look into buying compression stockings.

Re: Holy Swelling

Same thing everyone else said. It's common at this point in pregnancy to have swelling. LOTS AND LOTS of water. I'm drinking about 6-7 LITERS these days to stay hydrated (no swelling yet, knock on wood) lower your sodium intake and try and stay off your feet as much as possible!!!

We are almost there!!

Re: Holy Swelling

I am sorry! I have noticed some water retention, but it's really just like I am in a humid climate, nothing TOO bad.

I would think that avoiding high-sodium foods and drinking lots of water will help to just flush out your system.

Re: Holy Swelling

I feel your pain. My feet went up several sizes. My engagement ring still doesn't fit unless I force it on which I'm not willing to do yet.

Re: Holy Swelling

Hope it gets better! Be glad you got to wear your ring that long. Early on, every time I put my ring on, I got a little excema rash on that finger. I let it heal and tried again three times then gave up! I now wear it on my cross chain around my neck. It bums me out a little because people always say, wow, you're ring doesn't fit already! I also started swelling at 37 weeks. It was so sudden! One week I was fine and the next appt I was so swollen and my BP was high. I ended up being induced 10 days before by due date.

I kept my feet up, even at work, and drank a ton of water. Nothing helped!

Good luck!
