Holy obnoxiousness
This is my first busy season at my job, and I'm going insane, but that's ok....
here are a few fun tidbits from clients:
Mom about her scheduling issues with the tutors: "Listen, Jane was telling me about her dissertation or whatever and I was like 'Listen, I pay your rent;" (as in, she's paying for the tutoring so she should get whatever she wants)
Same mom about her interest in being involved in her son's education: "I am so not in the mood to make these kind of phone calls. I gave you my credit card number, that's all I really should have to do"
Another mom about my sales ability : "Dear, do you really want to lose this sale because you can't kiss a little tushie?"
Eevil dad. "blue people" will be replaced for what he really said "So this tutor you're telling me about...is he blue? I'm not blue-phobic, please understand this, but I have a teenage son, and I can't have a blue person in my house"
I hate people!

Re: Holy obnoxiousness
Yeah..this is just a small smattering..aside from the every day occurances of "If there isn't someone at my house tomorrow at 1pm, I'm going to demand a refund" and "For $XXXX you need to give me exactly what I want"
and I don't want a male,female,blue,pink,antarctic tutor....
Since when does being rich mean you have the right to be a complete obnoxious so and so?

I sell and manage tutoring courses, mostly for the SAT. I also recruit and train the tutors. Right now it's the busy season, so I'm managing about 100 families. Some of them are really great, but others treat you like dirt. They feel that since they're paying a lot of money they own you. And they treat me and my employees like dirt sometimes. One of my tutors says "They treat you like the gardener" which kind of describes the attitude, although of course gardeners also deserve respect.

Haha I just hang up the phone and curse them out! The worst was the "blue people" guy. I wanted to scream at him, but I had to just be nice and polite and then I rushed him off the phone so I could scream. I told him I could not ensure his tutor would not be blue and that we do not discriminate on the basis of blueness. I thought I got rid of him but now he's calling again.

It's not so bad, some of the families are reaaaaally nice.
I actually do like my job.
Oh and the most obnoxious parents call every day..smetimes several times a day.
And because it feels good to vent...
the tushie kisser lady called me one day at 4:40 and left a message because I was on the phone. I got off the phone at 4:48 and called her back. In that time she called several of my co-workers, my boss, 2 branches and the national number. When I called her back at 4:48 she screamed at me for 25 minutes because of my "Terrible phone service" because she couldn't reach me at that exact moment. And her question was not at all urgent. And I said "I returned your call within 10 minutes" and she says "What if it had been an emergency?"
Umm..a tutoring emergency?

What if you were her "Lifeline" on "Who wants to be a millionaire"... you could have lost her a million $$!!!!
(If that happened, I would probably give her the wrong answer, just to spite her....
Money can't buy class.....

Re: Holy obnoxiousness
Funny, I recently made the acquaintance of someone who also has a lot of money (and is sure to mention that frequently in various ways) who says some really prejudice and self-centered things also.
I don't want to lump this person in with the @ssholes of the world just because he has money, because then I would be no better than he is.
But WOW, it amazes me, the entitlement that these people feel. How dare you not be at their beck and call! That they can be so brazen about such discriminatory comments, and how they treat you and your staff!
It makes me sad that there are still such unenlightened, selfish people out there in the world.

Re: Holy obnoxiousness
As one of Jenn's coworkers, you would be amazed by the comments we hear on a daily basis.
A few of my favorites:
From a parent who was escalted to the director: "I have to speak to Mrs. Goldberg? Well, she won't be in today dear, it's Rosh Hashanah, she is Jewish"--actually no, she is in today, don't assume things.
From a parent who called yesterday--"I need to speak to more than a supervisor because my son did not grid in his test, because the teacher did not tell him to, and now he is embarassed."--Isn't it common sense that on a test when you are given an answer grid, you need to GRID IT IN!!!
From a parent a few years ago--"Is she the teacher?" Me-"Yes, she is." Parent: "But she's in a wheelchair" (she whispered it, as if it was a disease)
