Hitting when unhappy?

DD is 8 months and within the last day or two has started to hit me and DH when we do something she doesn't like. For example, she crawled and grabbed one of the dogs toys and went to put it in her mouth. I picked her up, took the dog toy away, and she hit me with her fists. Is this normal behavior for this age? If so, how do I deal with it? Does she know what she is doing? Is it too early to start with discipline? After the 3-4 times its happened, I've said to her "Do not hit Mommy -- that's not nice". Clearly she doesn't understand what I'm saying, but I feel that I just can't let the behavior go without something happening. Any advice/assistance? Thanks!

Just for the record, by discipline, I basically mean saying the "Do not hit Mommy" spiel. I didn't mean discipline as in time-outs, etc. Wanted to clarify!

I have a 9 monther too. When he hits, bites, pulls hair I tell him firmly "no, don't do x to mommy do gentle." And show him the gentle behavior. He doesn't get it but one day he will.

Hitting when unhappy?

My DD did that too. And she used to whack herself so hard I had no clue how she stood the pain. They are really just trying to communicate their frustration.
It's totally just a phase and she'll grow out of it. Like PP's said, keep saying 'no, we don't hit'. I actually made up a little song that I sang to her every time she did it. It would distract her.

Hitting is very common when children want to express something but don't yet have the verbal capacity to do so. Just keep saying "no" and redirecting. It's a stage!
