hiring your mother as a full-time babysitter..

Hi ladies, my sister is pregnant and wondering if she should hire my mother (and pay her) to babysit. She'd probably need her 5 days a week from maybe 10am -3pm.

Shes trying to think of the pros and cons of doing this. Can anyone offer some advice?

TIA!!

My mom is doing this for my sister's SIL. I would spell out the terms (writing them down). Off the top of my head -

Her hourly rate/weekly rate

Sick days - does your sister have a backup if your mom is sick?

Vacation days? - I realize this may sound over the top but what if your mom has a three day weekend planned.

Overtime - babysitting on weekends? Will your mom ever watch her for free if your sister needs additional help? Financially it could cripple someone if they had to pay for babysitting everytime they had to get their hair done, etc.

Can she take the baby out with her to run errands?

Visitors while working?

Pros - if the baby is sick, your mom will still watch her while another daycare would not.

You already know the background check - because you are the background.

My mom does this for us PT and we pay her because she needs the money and babysits instead of getting a PT job. It definitely has pros and cons but overall it's the best arangement for us because DD gets to be in her own home and we don't have to put her in daycare which we personally aren't comfortable with yet.
