High fever and no other symptoms?

Benjamin started running a fever last night. Since then, it's fluctuated between 102 and 104 degrees at it's highest and dropped to 101 at it's lowest. We took him to the doctor today and the usual causes were ruled out (ear infection, upper respiratory, strep). The doctor's aren't sure what it is exactly. They know it's a virus but not sure which one. We have to wait and see at this point, give him Tylenol and Motrin and fluids. One of the kids at his daycare (not in his room) has coxsackie so it could be that but they won't know until/if the sores in his throat start appearing. Basically he may be contagious so we have to keep him home until his fever goes down/away or he starts exhibiting other symptoms.

Has anyone else's DC experienced anything similar recently? I almost wish it were an ear infection because then we'd know what to expect. Not knowing sucks! Chat Icon

Re: High fever and no other symptoms?

DS woke up with 104 fever yesterday morning...I gave him motrin/tylenol off and on all day. This morning it was around 101, gave him some motrin and the fever never came back Chat Icon

My dr. did say that sometimes when kids get their eye teeth or their molars, he has seen high fevers for a day or 2 and than it goes away as quickly as it came. I know my DS is teething horribly. He is getting his eye teeth in and they are really bothering him.

I asked our ped if teething would cause such a high fever because DS is teething as well. He said it shouldn't cause a fever as high as his has been. We were up again last night with 104 fever. If it's not gone down by tomorrow, we're bringing him back in to the doctor. I guess it's viral but would love to know exactly what it is, kwim?

I hope your little one feels better soon. Chat Icon

I don't think teething produces a fever that high. Could be coxsackie or roseola. Chat Icon

Re: High fever and no other symptoms?

it could be a ear infection... when krys was little she had the same thing high fever and no symptoms... went to the dr. they 24 hours later and bam not just one ear but both ears where infected. and bad. i flipped out on them and said how is that possible. one day here ears are pink and look fine and the nest bright red and infected. either way hope the baby feels better soonChat Icon

Re: High fever and no other symptoms?

My DD had a fever like this we had her at the ER and they couldnt figure it out either. 2 days later once the fever broke she had a rash on her back. Her Ped said it was roseola. It went away in like 2 days and she was fine.

Roseola Infantum....he is considered contagious until the fever breaks...a day or so after the fever breaks he will more than likely break out in a rash. (although my older girls had it and never broke out in the rash)

Re: High fever and no other symptoms?

One time when Victoria was running a high fever - everything was ruled out. It seemed whatever virus she had - her body had already beat it and the fever was the last symptom to show. She was over it in 2 days.

Re: High fever and no other symptoms?

About a month or so ago DS had a 104.5 degree fever before he went to bed. We gave him Motriin and he slept through the night ... fever was gone in the morning.

That night I called the emergency number and they said if the fever didn't go down, to bring him in the next day. But he had no other symptoms and we never found a cause for the high fever. Just some sort of rogue virus!

Hope DC feels better!Chat Icon

Re: High fever and no other symptoms?

Thanks everyone. I'm keeping my eyes open for any other symtoms and writing down what he eats, when, etc. I just don't want to miss something obvious. Hopefully he feels better soon. It truly sucks not knowing exactly what is wrong with him. Chat Icon

Re: High fever and no other symptoms?

Okay well Ben's fever went up to 104.8 tonight. I was getting ready to bring him to the ER and called my MIL in a panic (DH was on his way home from work about 1 hr away). She told me to call the ped first so I called and spoke to the head of the practice. He said it's most likely roseola and Ben should be okay, meaning no fever, by Monday. On his suggestion, we're going to bring him in tomorrow anyway to make sure it's not his ears since he's prone to ear infection. The doctor made me feel much better. Hopefully this fever will be gone sooner rather than later.

Thanks for listening ladies!

It sounds like it's Roseola. DS had that a few months ago. His temp went up to 105 Chat Icon and I freaked out and brought him to the ER. On the 4th day the ped. did some blood work since there were no other symptoms...it wasn't bacterial. The next morning the fever broke and DS was fine. He has a small rash on his chest and back that went away within a day.
