Help...What is this?

Pic in my album

This is on my DD's arm. Its very hard I assume because its swollen. It also has a somewhat scaly feel to it.

My mom noticed a small pointy spot this morning and then it started to get bigger and redder by this evening.

DD did not seem effected by it i.e. no crying or fussy behavior. Of course I'm freaking out.

Could this be a spider bite? I got stung by a bumble bee the other day and the initial pain from it had me in shivers for a few minutes because it was strong. So if this was a bee bite DD would have definitely screamed. My mom said nothing like that happened. She was crying at one point, but because she was over tired and needed a nap.

I plan on taking her to the ped tomorrow if it does not go away or the swelling goes down.

Just wondering if anyone has any insight so I can sleep tonight.

Help...What is this?

It looks like a spider bite. It is pretty swollen you may want to give your doctor's office a call to see if you can give her something for it tonight like Benadryl.

I just checked again and the swelling is going down. I gave her some Motrin before she went down. I thought you couldn't give Benadryl if they are under a year old. DD is 8.5 months.

You may be able to give it but you'd have to get the dose from the ped. It goes by weight.

It could be a whole lot of things from poison ivy to a spider bite to an infection.

Poison ivy could be ruled out if kid wasn't outside... but it is pretty rampant this year.

My house & backyard has TONS of spiders, but neither of my kids has been bitten.

Derm or ped is the way to go.

Help...What is this?

We were ok'ed for Benadryl at 12m but dosage was given by the ped. However, topical crème was allowed before that, thing was you had to keep her from putting it in her mouth.

It looks like an insect bite, for sure.

For us we give Motrin to reduce the swelling and ice to reduce the pain (not direct ice of course). AJ's always reacted severely to bites!

I ended up taking her to PM Pediatrics this afternoon. The swelling went down significantly today, but it is still scaly, a bit hard and red.

Ped at PM said she thinks its a bug bite of some sort - spider maybe. She said since its shrinking in size that I should just apply calamine lotion on it and give Benadryl every 6 hours for 2 days. If in 2 days I notice any spreading or change in appearance, like puss or yellow scabbing I should come back and they will prescribe an antibiotic cream to put on it.

Since this afternoon it has shrunk even more, so I guess it was just a bug bite. She doesn't seem bothered with it, so I skipped the Benadryl for tonight.

Thanks for asking how she was doing and for the suggestions.
