Help with my cats

I have two cats that I love dearly but one of them is driving me up the wall! He has now started to claw my furniture and I don't know how to get him to stop. I am taking him in to get his nails clipped, I am buying him a new scratching box, and I put tape on my furniture which I HATE doing. They are both indoor cats and there is not way I can move them to indoor/outdoor cats. I also have a dog if this helps at all.

I am just looking for some more possible solutions to this problem. Please help!

Oh and I will NOT declaw, so that is not an option either.

Re: Help with my cats

I think there is spray you can buy to deter them, but I am not sure.

My mom's cat was doing this to one of her couches, and she actually bought a nice blanket that matched the decor and hung it over the corner he liked to scratch. He doesn't scratch it anymore!

Make sure there is a scratching post in all levels of your house.

Good luck

Re: Help with my cats

The problem is my cats don't like scratching posts. I can't tell you how much money I have wasted on them. They like to claw my furniture Chat Icon and these cardboard boxes that I get from trader joes.

Re: Help with my cats

mine are the same- I buy them everything and they still go after my couch

I bought cheap throw blankets at christmas tree store and when I am not home I throw them over the couch- they don't scratch then

they were $3 each- I actually need to pick up another one for the other side of the couch

it works

Re: Help with my cats

I have done the blanket trick, but I guess I will have to do it again. i am just so tired of looking at blankets draped over my nice couches.

I sometimes wonder since they only do it on my one couch that they sleep on if they think that it is their property, and that is why they do it?

I don't get it either. I have gotten them the delux stuff to claw and they want nothing to do with it, but a piece of cardboard and they go nuts for it.

I am just happy it is so cheap!

Re: Help with my cats

They also make some kind of double sided tape that you can put on the areas he scratches.
It's clear and doens't really show, won't damage the furniture and it really deters them. (Petco has it)
While you do that try to get him used to a scratching post or cardboard box scrather like others suggested... they sell a catnip spray in Petco- I spray it on the scratching boxes and they go right for it.
Once they get used to sharpening their claws elsewhere they wont' want to scratch the furniture.

Also- getting the nails clipped will help- they will blunt cut the nails so they aren't as sharp and damaging.

Good luck!
