HELP please ! Closing next week - what else is there to do....

So - we should be getting a closing date in the next few days for sometime next week (according to the bank) I was thinking about all the other "people" I need to call. Am I missing anything? Does anyone have any other suggestions ?

I know I have to call LIPA. We are going to be in Levittown so there's no need to call about gas because there is none. What do I do about the oil ? If they have a contract am I bound to it until it expires? If not, then I know I have to figure something out for oil delivery. Who do I contact about the water bill? The town of hempstead? (it's not Aqua, I know that much) After we do some work I am going to call to have FIOS hooked up. It's not my problem if they don't call to have their service disconnected right?

I feel like I am missing something - but can't figure out what it might be !

Any help, suggestions would be appreciated.

This isn't something you MUST do, but you may want to ask the current owner if they are willing to leave you copies of any "house paperwork" that they have. The old owners of our house gave us copies of everything: receipt/ manual for garage door opener, receipts/ manuals for appliances, copy of their contract/ maintenance log for the boiler, etc. It was great to have all of that information and I do refer to it pretty often.

if the house has cespools ask where they are.

oil-what ever is left in the tank you will purchase at closing
electric -LIPA
cable/phone/internet
water-call them and have it turned on the day of closing and the homeowner should have it shut off the same day. then you don't have to pay a service charge ontop of the start up fee. they do one meter reading for shut off and turn on at once. but cal as soon as you have a closing date, don't wait on this

Bring a digital camera to your walk through in case of any damage or items missing that you need to discuss at the closing table

find out about any contracts the previous owner has with oil co, alarm co, termite/exterminator and find out when they expire. sometimes its cheaper to renew them and change the name vs canceling and starting new

Also ask about any warranties they have left on appliances, and to leave you the info (like the fridge, stove washer etc)

I wouldn't have thought about the manuals for appliances & stuff, I would have just assumed that if they had them they would leave them. I'll definitely ask about contracts they may have to see about continuing them.

Heather, thanks for the tip about the water. I was going to call LIPA with the closing date as soon as I get it too.

According to the bank we're in the final stage of underwriting now and should have a date soon !
