Help! Chromosomes & Lies...
I need help. A chromosome abnormality was detected in DH's family last summer. While Maddie & Joe are fine, we don't know if they have it. Our pediatrician recommended having DH tested for it, rather than subject Maddie & Joe to the test.
The abnormality basically gives the carrier: - 1 in 4 shot to have a a child with no chromosome abnormality - 1 in 4 shot to have a child with the same symptomless abnormilty but when they go to conceive they'll have the same issues as a carrier. - 1 in 4 shot of miscarriage - 1 in 4 shot of having a child that would live for a short period of time or would have severe disabilities
Insurance will only pay for the testing ($500+) if it is related to the health of the patient. In other words, they won't pay for genetic counseling. They will only pay for genetic testing if I'm pregnant (which IS NOT happening). DH has to go for a blood test for his cardiologist. The cardiologist will include the test if he can write something that they are trying to diagnosis.
I know this is horrible to ask for help with but I need help coming up with a lie.

Re: Help! Chromosomes & Lies...
Are there symptoms of being a carrier that would affect DH in some way that he could complain of to get the testing done?
and just these because I know that is probably such a stressful thing to deal with.

Thanks for hugs.
There are no symptoms he would experience by testing for this specific chromosome disorder but they could just need to test for any chromosome disorder so we can get a karotype. Every bit of research I've done has been on genetic testing issues, so now I'm starting from scratch.

Could you say you're TRYING to conceive? Would they cover testing in that instance?

Re: Help! Chromosomes & Lies...
I don't know if this is of any help, but before DH and I started TTCing we got ourselves tested through this program that offered free genetic testing for jewish diseases. I wasn't willing to wait until I was pregnant to find out if we were carriers (I have a friend who did it this way and it turned out she and her husband are BOTH carriers for one of the diseases, and let me tell you, it was hellish pregnancy). This is the website for the place I had it done - it might be worth it to do a little investigating and find out if there's a similar program in NY.

Genetic Testing
Thanks I'll look at it right away. Were you able to get a karotype or did it just come back as negative for a specific disease

I'm going to show my ignorance here by saying that I don't really know what the difference is. From what I recall, we both went in for a consultation. They took a sample of DH's blood and sent it off to the lab to test for the presence of, I think, about 10 genetic defects that are particularly common to Ashkenazi jews, each test would normally cost about $500. His sample tested positive, I think, for 2 of the diseases, so they then took a blood sample from me and only tested for those two.
