Help - What to do?
Suppose to leave friday morning for 4 day family trip. My dad hurt his foot sunday and saw surgeon today and needs to have surgery. They scheduled it for Thursday. So there is no way my dad can go. My siblings and their kids still want to go as do I really. My dad is insisting we go and saying he is paying still. But I feel so bad. We agree we are not letting him pay and will pay ourselves. But now I am like...so we are going to be having a great time and he is having surgery? The other issue is the place was 50% down..so if we do not go, we loose $3k. Thoughts?

I think he'd want you to go
I know if it was me I wouldn't want my whole family to miss out on a trip- esp one that is 50% non refundable- because I got injured.
As long as it's nothing serious like a heart attack, etc. I would say honor his wishes and go...
But yes, I wouldn't let him pay if he wasn't going.... I agree with that

GO!
If it were me I would want my kid and grandkids to go and have a good time! I would hate that they would be missing out because I was hurt.
It's up to you guys about the money.
But I know me, and I would insist on still paying. I wouldn't want my kids (well kid since I only have 1) to be stuck with a cost like that last minute. So I understand where he's coming from.
Have a good time and FaceTime with him occasionally if possible

I agree with this - as long as there is someone around who can take care of your dad (or will he be in the hospital?) while you are away

1. See if you can buy trip insurance TODAY. Your dad wont be covered, but you MIGHT be.
2. GO ON THE VACATION!!!!!!!!!!!!
All you will do is sit home and do nothing. Visit the hospital for a little bit and drink bad coffee.
if your dad really means go, then GO.
This really is a no brainer in my book :)

I would feel horrible going as well but know that when my dad was alive he would have totally wanted us to go in a situation like that and would have insisted on paying for it.
Is it possible to reschedule rather than cancel and not lose your deposit? If so, I would do that for sure, if not, go and have a good time, im sure your dad would be happy you went.
