Help - question about toddlers and urination (UPDATED)
So last night, mikayla was VERY hesitant to pee before bed (she always goes no problem)...DH finally got her to go a TINY bit before bed
She went to sleep at 8:30, woke up at 9am and did not pee until 10:30 when I practically had to hold her on the potty to go....
she has only peed 3 times today when normally, she goes 7-8 times....it seems like she is trying to go (sometimes she is NOT trying but is fighting it) but cannot
she has had the same amout of fludi that she always has so I do not think she is dehydrated
any advice / suggestions?
UPDATE -
So I spoke with the ped who sent us to the hospital. They said they would have to do a cathether (sp) to get a sample...I was FREAKED out about this. Once we got into the room and miki saw the nurse put on the gloves, she freaked and started saying "I have to pee"....so we took her into the bathroom and she peed so they could use that as a sample and not have to do the cathether....I was SO relieved
Turns out she does not have a UTI...not really sure what is going on but she has not peed since that one time at the hospital (12pm or so)
The PA said sometimes kids just hold in their urine
I plan to follow up with my ped tomorrow
Thanks all

Re: Help - question about toddlers and urination
Did you ask her if it hurts to go?

I did and she said no...she says she has to go but then when I put her on, she tries to go and then says "no, no, I don't have to go".....I have been to the bathroom like 8-10 times with her today with no pee

It could be a UTI. Ask her if it hurts to go.

Well, my first thought would be a UTI, but she would be in pain then...
I'd probably wait to see what tomorrow brings and if she still is having the same problem, maybe take her to the ped

Maybe a yeast infection? would that cause pain too?

Not always. I have gotten UTI's that I wasn't in pain with - just couldn't "go". I would definitely take her to the ped because you don't want the waste to get backed up in her system! Good luck!

Re: Help - question about toddlers and urination
she was saying her belly hurts yesterday....not sure if that has anything to do with this....she had diarrhea a few days ago so I attributed her stomach ache to that but who knows

Re: Help - question about toddlers and urination
Hannah does this as well, esp in the morning. She wakes up dry every morning, but refuses to go in the morning when she wakes up (I can barely make it through the night, so I get concerned too.)
I ask her all the time if she has to pee and she gets mad about it and if I insist because we are going in the car or something she fights me, but I make her go.
She also says it doesn't hurt. She seems fine otherwise, so I have no idea.

Could it possibly be a kidney stone or soemthing like that? I don't think little girls have that though!

Re: Help - question about toddlers and urination
Kerri went through this but I think she was just learning to better manage her urination...meaning she went from about 8 times a day peeing to about 4 or 5.....which is what a lot of adults do.

during the week, mikayla does not go right when she wakes up but usually goes within an hour of waking at the sitters house...this morning, I thought she would have to really go since she only went a tiny bit before bed
she has not been having accidents...I will see how she is tomorrow and try to really load her up with fluids and see if it improves...if not, I will call the ped
thanks everyone

If you aren't opposed to a little juice, give her some 100% cranberry juice (not the cocktail) and in case it is a UTI or the start of one it will help a little!!

I am definitely thinking it is a UTI...she has not went since 7pm last night.....did not have any accidents over night
She just tried to go and started freaking, I asked her AGAIN if it hurt and she said yes
Has anyone else's toddler had a UTI...what is the course of treatment?

Awwww poor Miki-I think its antibiotics. Why don't you get her some cranberry juice?(unsweetened) Also I would make sure she gets antibiotics soon as I read its important to do it quickly. Does she have a fever?

Not always.. my DD is being treated for a UTI right now and her only symtom was a low grade fever for less than a day.
They will treat it with antibotics for 10 days then do a repeat urine culture to make sure it's gone.

I have had MANY a UTI in my lifetime, and as soon as I saw your original post, that's what I thought of--wish I had seen it sooner
Once she gets on the antibiotics, she'll start to feel better within a day or so. Poor thing--she probably had the urgency to go but couldn't.

Re: Help - question about toddlers and urination
if it is UTI she should at least have fever if not pain , but I would call the ped just in case. If it's not UTI have her checked for Labial Adhesions.
see this
Not saying that's what it is, but just to be safe.

That's the daily story in our house. Miranda holds her pee forever. We've just gotten used to it.
