Helmet/ plagio moms....opinions needed!

Georgie went for a check up on Jan 25. They did a minor adjustment and told us to come back on Feb 7. On Feb 7, they said that his head didn't grow since the last appt and to come back on March 7. That seemed like a long time, but I figured they know best.
For the past 3 days, the helmet is really bothering him. He shakes his head all the time and tries to get it off. I called the place today and have an appt on Friday.

The dr wasn't there, but I don't want to keep the helmet on him until Friday if it's bothering him. Should I just keep it off? All the time? Only during the day?

IMO, his head still looks flat (but I guess I am starting to see somewhat of a difference). Until now, the helmet hasn't bothered him AT ALL.

My son wore a helmet. If it is really bothering him and he has marks from the indententaion (i.e. its too tight) then I would probably keep it off.

i am no expert on this but I feel as moms we know best and our dr told us that if it is really too tight then quickly come in for an adjustment....if u cant go earlier than friday I would take it off and wait til then

My DS is wearing a helmet now. Has been wearing it for almost 2 months.
Our orthotist told us to keep an eye out for red marks, helmet not fitting right, etc. A few weeks ago, he had a red mark that didn't go away at 7pm at night and she told us to keep it off him until she could see us the next afternoon. I would keep it off until they can see you, but again I'm no expert either!

Re: Helmet/ plagio moms....opinions needed!

Jenn, Ant had a smiliar problem recently.

He had a rash and it was getting worse.
It took 3wks to see doc, it was during the snowstorms and the fact that he is only in this office 2x wk.

It ended up being on loose, causing a rash and the doc told us to keep it off until it was gone.
It was off for a whole wk.
I dont think it did antyhing less for not wearing it. it was important to me that the rash was gone.

Now its a tight fit and he wears it well with no probs.

Does he have red marks if you take it off? If he does, leave the helmet off for 1 hour. Any red marks should go away within that time. If it doesn't it needs to be adjusted for him.

I know DS' helmet was a different kind than the one Georgie has, so it very well could be a different situation, but I'm surprised they gave you an adjustment appointment for a month later! Especially if he didn't have any growth at the last appointment, you'd think they'd ask you to come in sooner since he's likely to have more growth.

For DS, he had to have an adjustment every WEEK until he reached the age of 7 months (he went once a week until 9 months old because he was 2 months preemie). Then he went once every 2 weeks.

I'd take it off for an hour or two, if the marks go away, put it back on. If they don't leave it off until they do go away, then put it back on for 3 hours and recheck. I probably wouldn't leave it off for 4 days though because it's likely his head grew already and you don't want his head to grow more during this week and for the helmet not to capture it. But worse case, call them and speak to them about it!

He has a few red marks but they could also be from falling and hitting his head. He does that probably 20x a day. Chat Icon I'll see how long they stay there for. It also worries me that he just seems so bothered by it lately. He just shakes his head from side to side all the time.

Maybe I'll just take it off for more (short) breaks during the day until we can get there on Friday.

DH has taken him to the last 2 appts and of course he didn't ask any of the questions that I sent him with. Chat Icon

Thanks for the opinions everyone.
