Helmet Moms - Suffolk

It's almost sure that DS #2 is going to need the Doc band (aka helmet). My ped thought it would resolve itself and I used the nest noggin on him...but it hasn't. DH has even noticed it hasn't worked and he notices nothing. DS #2 and is 5 months yesterday. I'm waiting to bring it up at his 6 months well visits...should I go sooner?

Did your ped have to refer you to a specialist to get your LO's doc band?

Did you have to see a neurosurgeon?

What else can you tell me about it?

Is there anywhere in Suffolk that you can go to for the helmet? Some of the posts I read hear have mentioned locations in NJ and in Nassau but none in Suffolk.

Re: Helmet Moms - Suffolk

Go sooner!

We had go to a neurologist first. Our ped gave us the name, but I don't think it was a referral per se. I'd call your ped.

The neurologist then referred us to the orthopedist who actually got the helmet for us.

It took a few weeks to get the appts and then it took 10 days to actually get the helmet. So if you wait for his 6 month visit he'll probably be nearly 7 months when he gets the helmet. IMO, if it's not getting better then the sooner you get that helmet on him the better. I'm kicking myself now for waiting til DS was nearly 6 months when I noticed at 4 months that it didn't look right.

Our neurologist is Dr Greg Rosenn in Plainview. And our orthopedist is Dr Anthony Cappa (Bay Orthopedic) in Huntington. I've been very happy with both of them. Please feel free to FM with any questions you might have. I'm happy to help!

Not Suffolk, but Dr. Mittler out of Cohens children's hospital was great. I was almost positive DD was going to need one her ear was even out of line, but she didn't. And I've heard he is quick to helmet. I took her at 5.5 months, she 8 months now and there was been a drastic change all on its own.

We are BIG Dr. Mittler fans. Go see him. If he does recommend a helmet, he'll send u to a place in Huntington. FWIW, I've found that he does not easily recommend helmets. He's terrific.

We also saw Dr. Rosenn and Dr.Cappa. I am very happy with the results! My son wore his helmet from 7 months to 1 year and I think his head looks great. I do wish we would have started earlier because he might not have had to wear it as long. Good luck.

We have the same exersaucer Chat Icon

I'd say it's definitely not symmetrical, but whether or not it's bad enough to need a helmet I have no idea. But it really can't hurt to just take him and have a professional look at it. Worst thing that can happen is that you waste an hour of your time at the dr's office (and maybe a little money on a copay Chat Icon ).

Good luck! Let us know how it turns out.

Yeah, I can see what you're talking about. Sometimes these things just correct themselves....but it can't hurt to go to a dr and get it checked out.

This is the place where Dr. Mittler referred us to for G.

http://www.bayorthopedic.com/

First I'd just go have a NS check the head to make sure (1) nothing more serious is going on and (2) whether he or she thinks that your DS would benefit from a helmet.

Just FM me if u have any questions!

ETA: G. had a NIC band, not a DOC band. Our insurance covered it completely.

Re: Helmet Moms - Suffolk

Go Sooner rather than later. I waited with my DS and kick myself all the time over it. Since it took almost 3 months b/w appointments, insurance, etc. to get the band on, he was near a year old when he got it. We did not get a perfect result due to his age. He would have had a perfect result had we not waited. He is 5.5 now, and most people don't notice but I do. And it is now an issue with fitting sports helmets. He was a severe case though.
