Heartbroken - PR
PR is devestated and we are sitting here feeling helpless. Family in San Juan has reached out via fb. They are safe and their house has minimal flooding but they are without power and don't know how many months it will take to restore.
No one has heard from friends and family on the south side and my cousin doesn't think she has a home or job to go back to.

I am so sorry, I know how you feel. My friends lost everything on St.John and St. Thomas when Irma hit. The people of Puerto Rico were wonderful with supplying aid after Irma.

So sad. I spoke to some coworkers there after Irma and they were so excited they dodged the bullet with that storm - only to have Maria sneak up and be a direct hit =(

They have no water and no power. Thankfully they stocked up but honestly wonder how long they can get by. Dh was talking to his aunt and when the airports open we hope they can come here. His cousin is a dr though so it's not like she can just up and leave.

It's 110 miles by 40 miles, with about 3.5 million people. Almost the same length as Long Island, about twice as wide, and about the same number of people as Nassau and Suffolk County.
Just imagine if Long Island was without power for months....
Their only power company is bankrupt, and billions in debt, which will greatly hamper rebuilding. The government of the island is also in debt by $70+ billion.

I haven't heard from my parents since Tuesday night - they live on the southwest side. I'm sure they are okay but I'm HATING not being able to communicate with them, or that something happened to them.

They are a US territory though, why can't we help with emergency funding and crews to get the power repaired faster? I know their power company is bankrupt but the government should be assisting no? I mean the US government

They will help. The main problem is getting the crews there.

Heartbroken - PR
I am devastated. The more pictures and video that we see the worse it looks. We still have heard nothing from DHs parents but the pics from their town are not good. Nothing from our other family members either many who are elderly. I just pray they are alive. One thing is that the people are sticking together and helping each other out according to the pics and videos so that's good.
Side note: We went to PR in February. My trip prior to that one had been 10 years back and there was a huge difference in the way the island was maintained. I told DH wow this is not good. My ILs moved back there almost 20 years ago and loved it up until very recently. The economy has taken a huge toll on the island. The deterioration of infrastructure was so evident to me then so how they will recoup from this disaster I don't know. It breaks from heart. Prayers for all
