Hearing test for 2/3 year old

Those who know how it's doen can you please explain it to me. I just made an appointmnet and the assistant was so unhelpful in telling me how it's done and what he would have to do....Chat Icon All I heard was "like I said"(which never answered my question) and "we do this all the time"....

Thing is as I explained to her my little one is never a happy camper at the doctors and FLIPS out when he's being touched and screams his head off to the point of almost vomitting. and he's not at that point where he would raise his hand when haring a sound and I know he will not wear anything on his head. The reception did tell me I would go in a room with him but that's it, nothing more...

Anyone familiar with toddler hearing tests? Please fill me in TIA

Re: Hearing test for 2/3 year old

My daughter had it done at her 3 year check up. I lived in Ca at the time so it might be different there. They tried to tell her to raise her right hand when she heard it in her right ear and left hand when in her left ear. She didn't get it and only raised her right hand. She still passed. She sat on my lap. She also had an eye test done then and she did great at both. She use to be afraid at the doctors(she screamed through her whole 2 year check up) so I was surprised she did so well but she really felt like a big girl doing those tests. They told her that she was growing up so much so now she thinks she will "grow" some every time she goes to the doctors.Chat Icon I wouldn't stress over it too much. They have seen and dealt with it all so don't worry about how your DC will doChat Icon

Re: Hearing test for 2/3 year old

Well AJ has been getting her hearing tested since 15mo. She's a pro now! haha

She's only 20mo now tho so it maybe different.

First they put a 'plug' in her ears one at a time to see if they are clear of fluid. Its totally painless and its like a ear bud so its not hard or uncomfortable. They don't shove it down or anything and it takes like 5secs each side and they can move with the child's head so if she moves to look at me they dont have to push her back etc. Its not like they are looking down her ears if that makes sense...

Then we go into the 'chamber' which is the real hearing test. They have me sit on a chair and she sits on my lap. they have a doggie in a box in front of me, a monkey with symbols (sp?) to clash on my right, and on my left is an elephant with a trumpet. Both the Monkey and the Elephant are in tinted boxes.

They play sounds and tones for her and as she reacts or looks to the right or left the Monkey/Elephant are activiated and light up with sounds. If she gets distracted or daydreams they 'center' her attention with the barking puppy in front of me.

So far AJ's very good at this little game. I have to keep very quiet and let HER figure out the sounds as in not pointing to it and going "look at the monkey" etc. She's lately been having more fun waving at the woman through the window! Chat Icon But they are patient and try and try again until they recongize she is or is not hearing the sound vs just not paying attention.

Hope that helps.

Re: Hearing test for 2/3 year old

Tyler has had it twice.

First time they put headphone on him and had drums in the corner of the room with dancing bears. When he heard the dancing bears beating the drum (all different tones and volumes) he would turns his head in that direction. He was younger when he had this test.

Last time was in March. He had leggo's and every time he heard a tone he had to drop a leggo in a bucket.
