Re: hearing for house permits?
I've been to two hearings for my house. It's usually pretty quick. Most of the hearings, they read the request, ask a few questions, ask if anyone has any objections, and either approve or deny it. Sometimes, people just ask for a few inches past an allowed limit. My driveway was like 2% too big, and my house was too tall if you measured from the street, but well below the height restriction if you measured from the ground around the house. I also wanted to build too close to the back fence, but it continued the grandfathered portion of the house, so they approved everything. I started my part just about on time both times, and each time only took about 5 minutes or less.
It definitely isn't fun for a 2.5yo, but if you can keep them occupied and relatively quiet, it should be OK.

I agree that it is relatively quick but it's usually packed and they try to move fast. I wouldn't bring your child, if it's at all possible to leave them home with someone.
