Re: Health Alarm Over New Hair Straightener (Brazilian Keratin Treatment)
I find it so strange that as organic, all natural foods become more and more popular (Whole Foods, Trader Joes) - more and more women are actually applying a known cancer causing chemical to their scalp. . .letting it sink in . . . and then walking around with it in their hair for who knows how long?
What is the disconnect. . . .?

Re: Health Alarm Over New Hair Straightener (Brazilian Keratin Treatment)
I've always been hesitant to get BKT for this reason.

Re: Health Alarm Over New Hair Straightener (Brazilian Keratin Treatment)
From article as well,
A. There haven't been any conclusive studies about BKT, but experts are concerned about the possible inhalation or absorption of the formaldehyde in it.
-for starters, its not applied to the scalp.
its applied ONLY to the hair. In a reputable salon, there is air ducts above your hear and the girls wear mask while its applied.
I, will take my chances.
There are other things out there that are warnings and too much is no good, Diet Coke, tanning, etc.
All in moderation.

whatever makes you happy I didn't post this to start drama or anything, or to judge anyone, it's your body, your hair...I just saw this on the news last night and thought some would find it interesting, that's all ...

You know those John Frieda hair glosses? The one that you can buy and apply on your own? It took my nail polish off...Its not only the BKT that has such strong chemicals, regular hair dyes do too. But this is an eye opener for sure!

It's definitely not just BKT I'd be wary of. I've heard horror stories about the Garnier Fructis brand "Blow Dry Perfector" treatment you can buy anywhere. If you read the reviews, people are saying it's so caustic their hair literally "melted". I don't know if there's formaldehyde in a drugstore product but whatever's in there is some pretty harsh stuff, don't know if I'd want to be inhaling something that melts the hair on my head.

Many suntan lotions take the shine off my nail polish as well...I guess it's just buyer beware but the lady @ my salon who does it wears a mask, gloves and has a fan blowing the fumes away...

I think there might be brands without formaldehyde.

Couldnt agree more Tilde. I've stopped dying my hair with ANY product for 2 years now because I refuse to add any chemicals to my body for vanity. As pp said we're exposed to chemicals every day. Why add to it? Is my hair full of gray at 35? yes. dh still wakes up every day and loves me for me, and i love me for me even my grays (and frizz for that matter! my gf raves about bkt but I absolutely refuse).
Thank you Tilde for your post

yups a client of mine literally had no hair left on huge parts of her head after she did this. i was horrified.
okay the bkt scares the poo out of me. i have never done one...only the copolla keratin treatment. now none of this is regulated...but most colors/dyes arent either....alot of things arent. i just go by what i feel comfortable with and from experience around certain chemicals.
always be careful especially if you try these sort of things at home.....!!

I am definitely not all organic or all natural or anything like that -- just noticed that and found it strange.
I also do not dye my hair and I try to keep things "natural." I stopped tanning, fake nails, and even those tanning lotions.

$$$
Most salons use the cheaper products that have formaldehyde. I have been using aldehyde based product - aldehyde is used in perfumes. Its not really organic either, but any chemicals that used to set the hair should wash out after the 3 day application.
It doesn't hurt to ask the salon what brand they use, write down the name of it, and research ingredients.

i have probably used hair dye only once in the past 10 years, and i havent used perfume in years either. i think it's almost impossible to completely eliminate chemicals out of one's life, but i try to do my best to limit them as much as possible.

Re: Health Alarm Over New Hair Straightener (Brazilian Keratin Treatment)
I dont' know- I embrace my curls. No, they aren't perfect, and yes, they are hard to maintain and style, but I don't like how I look with straight hair. Espeically when you are FORCING it straight with chemicals...it's just so damaging. I'll take hair with a little body in it any day.
