Having my amnio tomorrow...UPDATE..amnio done!!
I'm trying not be be nervous, but I can't help myself.
For those who have done it already, can someone tell me what I can expect as far as what they're going to be doing and how they're going to be doing it.
DH and I discussed this and know based on family history and our ages that it's for the best, but I'm still a little nervous about the entire procedure.
9/1/07
I stayed in bed all day yesterday after I got home, so I couldn't post until now.
It hurt...that's all I'm going to say. It was two pinches. One when the needle went into my belly and one when it went into the sac to get the fluid.
I'm still a little crampy and am a little concerned, but no bleeding and no reallly painful ones, so I'll just rest all weekend.
Thanks for all of the well wishes.
The little bugger kept it's legs closed so we couldn't tell the sex. Darnit!!!!!!!

Re: Having my amnio tomorrow...
It definately is not as bad as i thought. They do a sono and see where the baby is the dr cleans your abdomen and guides the needle via sono to get fluid. it doesn't hurt really but is a little uncomfortable. the main thing is to try to stay as relaxed as possible!! Good Luck!!

Re: Having my amnio tomorrow...
The worst part for me was waiting or the results. Basically its just like the above poster said. When they put the needle in(right below your belly button) it does hurt a little and feel a little uncomfortable--but it is very short...very quickly after they insert the needle they replace it with a tube(you wont feel that at all) so that if your baby swims into it it wont get hurt. I felt about 2 seconds of cramping while they did the procedure and none afterwards. I felt lightheaded afterwards but I think that was more because I was so nervous about it. The dr told me to stay on bed rest or "take it easy" for at least 24 hours. I felt completely fine during that time but took it easy for longer than 24 hours just to be safe. Good Luck!!

Re: Having my amnio tomorrow...
The worst part for me was waiting for the results. The above posters accurately describe the procedure. I didn't have any cramping at all. If you compare it to getting a shot (like a flu shot or novacaine at the dentist) IMO it hurt a WHOLE LOT LESS. It was more like a quick pinch.
DH on the other hand was flipping out. He was sitting next to the belly watching the whole process at eye level while I watched on the sono monitor. He tells everyone that the scariest moment was after the MD put the needle in, he turned around and said I'm going to change my gloves, and then took off his gloves, washed his hands and put on a new pair before he took any fluid out.

I advise you NOT to eat. The baby will be "calmer".
The procedure was fine. I was just a bit nervous with the needle and the baby. But everything went well.
They told me the first 24 hours were crucial. I did have some cramping (like AF). They told me it was normal. I did the procedure also on a Friday. I rested... I mean feet up and limit my walking to bathroom the whole weekend. I did not want to take a chance.

I wanted to wish you the best of luck. We did the CVS abdomanally( my perinatal Dr specializes in it and advised it for us) . Ther were 2 quick pinches.
It was really quick as others have said. I took it easy for a couple of days as well.
RTA- when it was over I was shocked b/c it really went SO fast.

Good Luck!! ITA. That is exactly what it was like. The needle prick feels almost like a big mosquito bite. You will feel a little pinch & then that is it. The needle is super-thin, and you only feel a tiny little bit of pressure when the fluid is extracted.
good luck!
