Has anyone organized a 5k race for charity?
Looking for a little direction. Has anyone organized a 5k run/walk for charity in Suffolk? Long story short my husband and some of his family live with a genetic condition which we would all like to raise more awareness and money for their foundation. I've been researching how to start this, but in the short time I haven't been able to figure out how to use a park for this type of event. Anyone know where to start with this?

You will need a permit from the oversight authority. So either the town or county. You are better off with a county facility since there will need to be organization with the police and Suffolk has their own parks police division. If you can keep it contained to the facility, you are better off, otherwise you are dealing with road closures and other municipalities, which can mean more permits, etc.

Maybe contact GLIRC, which is the Greater Long Island Running Club. They have tons of 5K's on their calendar to support various causes. They could probably provide valuable guidance to you & walk you through it, and maybe even help with sponsorship. Can't hurt.

Has anyone organized a 5k race for charity?
We just started doing this last year for our PTO
Permit to shut down the roads Letters sent out to all businesses/homes along the closure to notify them of road closure and race Timing company for the race (most expensive thing out of all) Get sponsors/donations Entice with names on t-shirts/and or banner Website to collect registrations and that has all start times and info

Thanks. Do I need a timing company if I make it just a fun run/walk?

It doesn't have to be timed...but I think more people would sign up if it was. When I was running 5ks regularly I only did timed ones. You could also do a raffle at the end & get local places to donate prizes like gift cards to restaurants & stores.

What timing company did you use? Do you mind sharing an around about price?
