Is this do-able? Especially in this type of heat? I'm talking about real camping in tents with no electricity or facilities. Were they OK sleeping outside in a tent? Were they bored?

Re: Has anyone ever gone camping with a 1.5 year old?
We went in June when he was 21 months. We were in a cabin with VERY limited facilities - pretty much just electricity for the 2 lights in the cabin and running cold water. James did just fine. He slept in his PNP. He was so tuckered out from all of the activities during the day that he just crashed at night and STTN with no problems.
Good luck!

Totally do-able. We took DS camping at 13 months. Totally not bored. We tent. I grew up camping so it's fun for me.
He was not walking so we brought his jumperoo to keep him safe while we cooked or cleaned.
He slept in the pack n play and we have an air bed (FYI, do not leave DC on airbed when you decide to stand up, catapulting him to thankfully land in a pile of clothes on the floor! ).
It was in the end of July and it was hot but most campgrounds are pretty shady so you're comfortable. At night... it was COOOOOOLD!!! I would put on every pair of socks I brought myself plus anything long sleeve I had plus a sweatshirt!!! Thank gosh my SIL told me to pack long pjs for DS. I think I put on his pjs plus socks plus his sweatshirt plus two blankets! Be prepared for cold nights!
I have a bike seat on my bike so we did a lot of bike riding. And we went with my sis and bro so he had 5 of his older cousins for entertainment. But there are lots of kids anyway, at the pool and river.
I was just thinking about planning another trip this summer!
