Hardwood floors and paint: which comes first?

The house we're buying has carpet in the dining room. We definitely want to put down hardwood floors. I'm pretty sure there aren't any hardwood floors underneath. We also need to repaint the dining room. Which should we have done first: the hardwood floors or the paint?

Definitely paint before you do any of the flooring. You won't have to worry about getting paint on the new floors

We painted before we put down our new floors. This way if we got it on the old smelly carpet (or concrete floor) it didn't matter!

Paint Before!

We didn't have the option due to our painters' availability and we're a nervous wreck every time they lay down the tarps.

Paint First if you have the option.

Paint first. You may need to touch up the base moulding - but that's better than messing up newly refinished floors!

Our house had it too. Carpet in the dining room!! Not fun with a few kids, I'm so glad we now have the hardwood.

I honestly don't get why anyone would want carpet in the dining room. It seems so much easier to clean up messes with hardwood. That's the one project I want done ASAP.

We painted first.
There was one room which we didn't get to paint before the floors were re-done so when we did get to paint it, we just taped butcher paper down on the floor and were VERY careful!

I completely understand the financial aspect of it. I prefer hardwood floors in the bedroom, but am willing to deal with the carpet for now. For me, putting hardwood floors in the dining room is important though. Coming from a family who often spilled things, I personally don't want carpet anywhere we're going to eat.

The house we're buying is less than 10 years old. I just find it strange that the builders would've chosen to put carpet in the dining room. I always thought most people prefer hardwood in dining rooms, if for no other reason than the convenience of cleaning spills.

i totally hear you!! if it were up to us we would definitely have wood floors in the dining room as well... but we looked into it and got quotes and it was just too much for us.. which we are lucky now because its just us 2.. so its fine for now..but i am hoping in the future we can rip it up and put wood.

Floors. There is a huge amount of dust, plus the guys who did ours (fm if you want details) splashed polyurethane all over the molding and some of the doors. Also nicked some of the molding. Even if they are neat though, I think your paint will get damaged to some degree.

Re: Hardwood floors and paint: which comes first?

we did the floors first and am so glad we did. The amount of dust after was insane. Just make sure you wipe down the walls really well before you prime and paint. I was afraid to paint first thinking that the dust would stick to the freshly painted walls...but I guess if you wait long enough that wouldn't be a problem. We needed the floors done before we moved in.

Re: Hardwood floors and paint: which comes first?

we painted before hand and so glad we did.. we ended up with paint splatter all over, and really didnt care because we knew that they were going to be sanded. plus after you clean up all the dust from your floors being done, the last thing you are going to want to do is paint Chat Icon
