Hardwood floors
I have hardwood floors and I think my cleaning lady is cleaning them with water and Pinesol every 2 weeks.
Is this damaging the wood?
Also I noticed that there are some gaps between some of the planks in certain areas (as if the coating has come off) but they are in good shape. Do I need to do anything to fix it? or is it fine the way it is?
Thanks

Re: Hardwood floors
well pinesol is fine for wood floors. As far as the gaps, you may need to reseal them.

Re: Hardwood floors
The guy who is finishing our hardwood floors told us to use vinegar and water mixture because most other chemicals leave a residue on the floors.

Re: Hardwood floors
The gaps might also be from the cold weather. Im pretty sure the wood shrinks in the cold, and it makes the planks appear like there are gaps. In the summer they will go back to being flush.

also, if you had them refinished they could have put wood filler in the gaps and now it is coming out. We had ours refinsihed in the summer and by the winter some of the filler was coming up btwn the cracks b/c the wood was contracting.

Re: Hardwood floors
Our floor guy told us to use Bona Hardwood Floor Cleaner. You just spray it on the floor and it comes with a Microfiber mop to mop it up with....

Re: Hardwood floors
Most cleaners are absolutely no good for hardwood floors. Even standing water is not good.
My hardwood floor guy said dust and dirt leave the most scratches so
1. vacuum
2. dry swiffer
3. spray the head of a microfiber mop with vinegar and water and damp mop the floor. There should be no standing water on the floor and the mop head should not be saturated.

I use Method wood floor cleaner with a microfiber mop that's damp to the touch.

Really? I had never heard that. I guess it's the scent? I have been using the Method cleaner on mine.
In past apartments I've also used Murphey's oiI soap.

Re: Hardwood floors
We've been using a touch of Murphey;s Oil in water. We sweep mostly, and vacuum periodically. I don't want to scratch the floors with the rollers on the vacuum.

Re: Hardwood floors
I use the Murphy's Oil Soap for a thorough clean once a month. I vacumn with the soft brush attachment once a week followed by the Swiffer Wet Jet with the Wood Cleaner. To be honest my floors need to be resurfaced (I inherited when I bought house) but we can't afford to do it right now, so I just try to keep as clean as possible.
Murphys also do wipes which are good for spillages

Re: Hardwood floors
DH's cousin owns a wood refinishing business and did ours. He said, as Bridget and some others said Water and Vinegar. He said absolutely no Murphy's or Swiffer wet jet type stuff or you will be seeing him in half the time you normally would have!
Water and Vinegar all the way!
