hard water or soft water??

This is a really dumb question but what kind of water does Long Island have? When I shower at my parents house on LI, my hair takes a long time to dry but dries straighter and is smoother, In VA where I live, my hair dries so quick and it feels so course and dry. If LI water is hard or soft, is there a way I can make my water here like that?? I told you it was a dumb question!!

I have hard water. It's easy to tell because the faucets get calcium build-up, there are white spots on the car when you wash it, etc.

I bought and installed a whole-house water softener to alleviate that problem. The water is fine now.

Re: hard water or soft water??

I am in the Town Of Hempstead so I am not sure if we share the same water supply.

But based on how I have to chemically treat my hot tub every time I fill it with fresh water, I have VERY soft water. I literally have to throw in an entire bottle of the water hardness increaser every time I fill.

I hope that helps. You can have the water tested by buying one of those pool test strips that test for water hardness and PH. You can get them at any pool supply store.

From what I've been reading I think my parents on LI have soft water, and we have hard. How expensive is a water softener? Were do you go to get one?

I would say it depends on where you live on the Island. My friend lives on the south shore (a few blocks from the water) and has extremely soft water. Soft water usually leaves a residue on the skin. If you soap up it feels like you can never truly rinse off all of the soap. I and my ILs live mid-Island and I would say we have water somewhere between soft and hard. My parents (who live upstate) have hard water. Unlike soft water, hard makes it difficult to lather and leaves my skin/hair feeling extremely dry. Also, hard, like posted above, leaves deposits on facets, tubs, sinks, etc.

Is this area in Florida near the water? I find that the closer you are to the ocean the softer the water gets.

I got mine from Sears. I got it about 8 years ago and I installed it myself (you have to tap into the main water supply and do some soldering, so it may be above most peoples' abilities). The cost is about $400-$700

I thought LI had soft water. Chat Icon It always took forever for it to dry for me. Down here in the south, I thought we had hard water. I know it's different because my hair dries quicker and straighter.

Water types can differ block by block. Like I said, my friend in Lindenhurst has soft water and in East Meadow we have water somewhere between hard and soft. My parents have hard and my grandfather (who lives 3 miles away) has between water. It all depends on the source of your water and how it is treated.

I think my parents (Babylon area) have soft water, because my hair feels cleaner and softer when I shower there, here in VA, my hair feels so course and dry!!

That would make sense since Babylon is on the South Shore. The closer to the ocean the softer the water.
