Hard decision with my Literacy Program need advice ( a little long)
I am getting a certificate of advanced study in Literacy. At first I signed up just for Birth-6. Then last semester they talked me into getting the extension (5-12). Thought it was a good idea at the time...but now I am seeing how much student loan debt I am really in between my Bachelors, Masters and now this (and it's ALOT) I want to drop the extension. Now they are saying that I can't get certified without it. I will have completed the B-6 portion in the summer but cannot do a partial certification.
It will take me another year to complete the extension. Honestly I am not sure I will ever do 5-12. I am also concerned that I may be pregnant next year and will not want go to school for another year.
Should I drop the extension???
Thoughts???

I would drop it. . .. it sounds like you really don't want to teach the upper levels, you can't afford it, and you have other things going on in your life....
i think having the literacy experience is going to help you regardless... it's your THIRD (i think???) certification and that is great... unless you really want it and tihnk you're going to use it, i wouldn't do it. it may open job opportunities in the middle/secondary level, but you're not sure if you want those levels anyway. also, if you stay in NYC so many of the middle schoolers will still benefit from your literacy experience... and if you do special ed. many of our middle/high schoolers are so below grade level anyway, that i think the elementary literacy would suffice (to a degree of course, it depends on their levels).
I hope this helps... it's a hard decision. if it were me, financially i probably wouldn't bother unless it was an area you were REALLY passionate about... or if you think you would become a literacy coach or sometihng along those lines.
