Hanging things on very thin plaster walls?

As the years go on, I hate my house more and more. After living there for almost 4 years, my walls are still bare.

The walls are textured plaster and original - house was built in 1930. I feel like the second I go to put a nail in the wall, they are going to crack.

How do I go about hanging stuff? My living room has cathedral ceilings and it's driving me nuts that there's nothing on the walls - it just looks cold, KWIM? I wnt to make it more "homey".

Are there special nails that I have to use? A special technique?

Please help me make my house a home!

We have plaster walls and don't have any cracking issues hanging stuff up. If your walls do crack you'll have something covering the crack anyway.
