guest bedroom & bed question

i've been keeping busy at the beach and pool lately so i haven't been on much but its getting close to project time again and i need some help....

in the near future i plan on making my office/den the official guest room of the house (right now the bed is upstairs in an empty room)....the office/den is small and it will have to fit a full size bed and a desk at the very least...if i put the bed sticking out into the room (the way you normally place a bed) i won't have room for the desk so the only solution i can think of is placing the bed as if it were a daybed against the wall...if i do that i can have both the bed and a desk, as well as a side table/nightstand...

has anyone done this? i have a few ideas - like getting a king headboard (maybe something like this: http://www.westelm.com/products/modern-weave-headboard-g026/?pkey=cheadboards-bed-frames) because a king headboard should be about the same width as a full size is long....and then i could arrange the pillow as if it were a daybed...but do you think it will look stupid? do you think it will be uncomfy for 2 people to sleep on? i can always pull it away from the wall if i had too, if my guests were like banging their knees/elbows on the wall Chat Icon...

good idea or bad idea?Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: guest bedroom & bed question

Personally I don't like that idea. Your guests really won't be able to sit up at night if they wanted to unless you pin it against where the 2 walls meet. I'm not a fan of daybeds to begin with tho. I had one growing up and I hated it.

I can see the look you are going for and visually I'm sure it will look okay but, day beds usually have something on the sides that distingushes it a day bed.

Dont you have 4 bedrooms? You wouldn't consider making one upstairs a guest?

We have a small room for our office / guest room as well. We ended up getting a futon that pulls out into a full bed. We still had room for a desk, filing cabinet, and book shelf.

Sorry this was the best pic I had. You can't see it but on the other side of the room is the desk and then the other wall has the filing cabinet

We did the same exact thing as MikeandJess -- we got a nice futon that functions like a couch, but opens up into a full sized bed. We also use our spare bedroom as an office area as well.

If I had a constant flow of overnight guests (e.g., a lot of out of town family who came for extended visits), this set up probably wouldn't work, but we only really have occasional overnight guests -- mostly friends from the city who stay a night -- so it's fine for that purpose.

If I had more guests that stayed for multiple nights, I would want it set up more like a bedroom, such as with a nightsstand, TV, etc. But that would be a waste of space for us right now, since the room would rarely be used.

Re: guest bedroom & bed question

thanks jess...i have something sort of like that in there now (but when it opens its smaller than a full size) and its not really comfortable...my inlaws may be staying for weeks at a time (yikes Chat Icon) so i need the bed...and like christine said, i'm probablu going to put in a tv and nightstand...basically it will be my inlaws room/my office when they aren't around...

how funny! i had a daybed growing up and i loved it....borderline obsessed with it Chat Icon

i don't really want to do a daybed but if i put the bed against the wall the way it will fit in the room than i can't see any other way to arrange the pillows? kwim? and i figure the headboard would at least dress it up a bit i think? otherwise i think it would look weird to make the bed the regular way while its against the wall...and then i can't put a headboard at the head of the bed b/c there isn't a second wall, the headboard would be in the air b/c the bed would have to go where my desk is now centered on the wall...

you are right, i do have 4 bedrooms...2 are upstairs and 2 are down (master is downstairs)...i want to keep the future "kids" rooms together upstairs....when we have a newborn i don't want my inlaws being closer to the baby's room than I am kwim? i don't need (or want! Chat Icon) my guests (inlaws! Chat Icon) going in to take care of the baby in the middle of the night - and if i'm up there feeding the baby, putting the baby to bed i want privacy....even when the kids are grown up i rather have the adults on the same floor as us...

so i'm trying to figure out how to put a full size bed and desk in a very small awkwardly shaped room Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: guest bedroom & bed question

or i could give up my computer room/desk BUT i would hate to do that...the amount of time i am on the computer is so much greater than the amount of time we have guests....so i'd hate to give up an entire room for a few weeks a year...and i don't want to stick them on an air mattress...they might be doing extended stays in the future...

i just need a good solution....

Re: guest bedroom & bed question

Ok I get it. I just went back to look at ur pics and it is hard to work with bc of the shape. I think what I would do is move the desk upstairs to your loft?? Make the office strickly a GB.

If you are in ur office a lot, what will you do if your inlaws are with you for weeks? Will you be invading their privacy if you want to go into your office? I know when my parents stay with me we give them our room so they have a private bathroom and we sleep in the guest. I feel weird going in their room where all of their stuff is. I go in to get my clothes and that its. But, I weird too. haha

If you are set on making this work with the bed you already have, the only option I can think of is the one you already suggested. Can you leave the bed sideways and when they come flip it? I assume you would move the desk to the angled wall?

Re: guest bedroom & bed question

If I was you, I'd get something new for the room so it could be multi-functional. Maybe a love seat that opens up to a full size bed.

If you have two bedrooms upstairs and plan to have two kids-- eventually one of them will need a bed. We have a full size bed in our "guest room" now-- but DD will get it when she moves into a bed, and we use her crib for another child. Put the full size bed up there for now, so you have something for guests-- and set up your office so you can use it and be on the look out for something that will work in your space.

We sleep in that bed with her now when she wakes up in the middle of the night and I am too tired to sit with her in the chair in her room-- it'll be convenient to have that bed up there with a baby anyway!

well when they come now they stay for a few days and i don't go on the computer when they are here BUT if they came for like 2 weeks or a month i'd def want to use the computer at some point Chat Icon so i figured i'd just take the computer out of the room when they are visiting (its a laptop) and keep it in my bedroom or upstairs and then they'd have the desk to themselves (i figured i could get a longer desk with no hutch that has file cabinets as the legs b/c i NEED that - we have so many papers!) so that they'd have some space for their things...and then i planned on mounting a tv above the desk - so they'd have a tv in the room....in my head it works, i just don't know if the bed will work...

i wouldn't go in the room while they are using it unless i needed to get something that happened to be in there and i'd say ohh do you mind if i get "xyz" or "can you bring me out xyz"

right now i keep our keys, ipods, phones, mail, files, computer, magazines in that room and its conveinent b/c its right off the kitchen and i like being able to shut the door if it a disaster in there - my kitchen stays so clean b/c i keep my junk in the office....so i wouldn't want to lose that...i really don't want to put that stuff anywhere else....when they come visit i can just charge our things in our room and let them use the chargers in there and unless they are staying long term there is no problem for me to go through the mail somewhere else, just like i can take the computer out....but i really don't want the room to lose its full time purpose...

i just wish it were bigger.....i don't think i could flip the bed either b/c i measured and the desk and bed overlap...so unless i took the whole desk out of the room every time they visited i can't turn the bed...

that could work too...getting a sleeper sofa type of thing if i can find one that will fit when its open...but that might be $$

i did think about how great the bed would be if it were upstairs when we have a little one though...especially in the middle of the night...

Well, if you make one of the upstairs rooms the guest room for now-- you really only need the sleeper/sofa thing when you actually have a DC and you don;t want people upstairs, etc. So just take measurements and be on the lookout for sales and deals, etc. It's not like yuo need it immediately, ya know?

I have something similar. Got it from walmart and it actually looks like a couch youd use in your LR as opposed to a bed. Works the same way as a futon.
