Re: Cancer Related Question-?
not usually. I know that in the case of my mothers' surgeries she actually had to delay her original chemo treatment b/c they found another cancer in her post-op checkup. She then had her 2nd & third surgeries & than her chemo for 6 months.
What was the reasoning the oncologist gave? Do you need a referral for a second opinon?

Re: Cancer Related Question-?
Yes.
My Boss was diagnosed a year ago with espogual (SP?) carcinoma. They did about 9 months of chemo and then had surgery this past holiday season. They needed to decrease the cancer cells in the body before the Dr's could operate, but they did and now he's recuperating.

Re: Cancer Related Question-?
Well in what context?
Some doctors depending on the type of cancer and progression would want to try chemo first and if they don't get the results they want, would then recommend surgery. But if they think that there's a good chance chemo would take care of it, say shrink the tumor, than they might suggest that route.
It's not in the norm... but every cancer is different.

Re: Cancer Related Question-?
Yes. My boss has tongue cancer. He had chemo/radiation combined to see if it would respond. They were trying to avoid cutting his tongue.
When they checked on the progress, the surgery was unneccesary.
I believe if it's an area where the surgery could do some damage or they can't get to it, they try to shrink the tumor.

They did that with my grandmother years ago.. that was before they made the advances with melanoma that they did.
they performed chemo, and then surgery, neither worked..

I know that they seem to be resistant to another opinion, but I am a firm beleiver that you have to have a good team of Drs when there is cancer involved. If you think it will help at any time, please feel free to FM me for my mom's oncologist. I truly believe that her team of Drs came together well & saved her life. She has 3 aggressive cancers diagonsed all with in 6 months of each other. As of this May she will be cancer free for 4 years.

Has anyone ever heard of chemo first-then surgery????
Yes I have. I've heard it is dune to shrink the affected tissue so it is easier/confined for removal.

My father passed away from pancreatic cancer 3 years ago. He had 2 and half years of life after diagnosis (which is a lot by normal standards). My family credits his chemo drug Gemzar (Gemcitobine) as well as his doctors for his extended time with us. The drug was recently written up as being the best chemo drug for cancers relating to the pancreas. Your FIL should ask his doctors about it.
I also know that because of the location and stage of the tumor, pancreatic cancer is often declared inoperable... it is possible that the doctors want to try to shrink it to get a better chances of having an operation.
Your family will be in thoughts and prayers.

Re: Cancer Related Question-?
one of my Dad's friends had panceartic cancer and they did chemo- then surgey- he is cancer free- which is amazing - even the doctors can't believe it
I would get a second and third opinion and I would only go to Solan Kettering in the city in this situation
they prolonged my Mom's life for over 2 years when she was only given 2 months
we also have a good family friend that is an oncologist on LI- if you want his name and number

Re: Cancer Related Question-?
I actually have heard of that with ovarian and some stomach cancers. If the docs feel its agressive they will combo treat with chemo/ radiation to stop the growth of the tumor/cells and the surrounding tissues. Then they go in surgically to remove the dead cells/ tissue. HTH
