Growth Problems

I had my growth sono this week and didn't get good news. First they were concern that my fluids were too low so they wanted to monitor me and possibly put me on bedrest. They were also concern that the baby was measuring a week or two behind. I went today for a followup and it seems my fluids are now good but they are now very concern with my baby's growth. I'm 35 weeks and baby is weighing in at 4.9 pounds. I went to see a specialist today and he suggested bedrest for 2 weeks to see what happens. I see my doctor on Monday to discuss today's results and see what the next steps are.

Has anyone had any issues like this? Will bedrest really make a difference to my baby's growth. Right now she's only in the 7 percentile. They don't want me to stress but how can I not.

Re: Growth Problems

last pregnancy I had to go on bed rest at 38 weeks to let the baby grow more... and he was born two weeks later, and it definitely worked! Each week I went back, the baby was thriving!

hmmm im about a week ahead and baby measured 5lb 11 oz today. its only about 1/2 lb more for the week difference.

at 35w, baby should gain another 1/2 lb per week giving her another 2.5 lbs. Seems like low 7's if you go to 40w.

i would follow their suggestions but I think you should be OK as long as baby keeps gaining Chat Icon

No real answers, but wanted to share Chat Icon

Remember perfectly healthy babies do come in all sizes. Some babies are larger, some are smaller, just like adults. Also, the measurements have a very significant margin of error. I would take your doctors advice, but try not to get too worried if that's possible.

Did they see anything else that would be cause for concern or just the size?

Normal pregnancy since the beginning. I felt great throughout the pregnancy. I have 2 little ones which make it impossible for me to relax plus I work full time. Doctor said that might be what's causing the problem so now I'm on bed rest to see if the baby can catch up.

Re: Growth Problems

i feel your pain! when i was pg with #1, i was put on bedrest after my 32 week sono when they said the baby was measuring small, specifically her abdomen. i thought it was BS too, but i did stay on bed rest for a few weeks. after about 3.5 weeks, i went back to work and tried to just sit as much as possible, take the elevator etc. i ended up being induced at 38 weeks due to possible preeclampsia and low fluid and my DD was 5 lbs 12 oz at birth.

good luck and hang in there. i know it totally sucks!

I think bed rest will help if the doctor thinks it will, but I also wouldn't stress. Someone has to be in the 7th percentile. Someone has to be the smallest baby -- so I wouldn't stress because of that. Try to take it easy and hope for some weight gain!

I'm just shy of 35 weeks and having similar issues. I haven't been able to gain much weight this pregnancy and the baby has been on the small side since 30 weeks. Dropped from the 60th percentile at 20 weeks to the 20th at 30 weeks. So far the baby has remained on the 20/30 percentile curve. My doctor said as long as he/she remains there than it's ok. My fluids have been on the low side, but drinking more has always helped. I got close to an IV 4 weeks ago when I was sick, but was able to avoid it. I think bed rest is your best bet! Hopefully the baby will stay on his/her curve. It's been really stressful for me, I can imagine it's been the same for you. I know for a fact that mine is directly related to having a crazy 20 month old! I'm sure having two kids at home makes it even harder. Hope you get some rest!

Growth Problems

when I was pregnant with DS he measured 4lbs 15 oz at 35 weeks, he was in the 8th percentile, they freaked me out so much that I refused to leave the hospital until I spoke to a dr. They assured me that he was just on the smaller side and I could have NST and weekly sonos until I delivered, I did just that. My son was born at 40w3d and weighed 6lbs 2oz. He was perfect!!!!

I just had a growth sono now at 33w with this pregnancy and the baby us measuring 4lbs 2oz. Pretty much the same size as DS and of course I have to have a repeat sono but this time around I am not stressing out about having a baby on the smaller side because my vagina will appreciate it =)

As long as your baby is born over 5lbs then he/she will not need to be in the NICU. Just take it easy, they are most likely putting you on rest to prevent labor at 37 weeks, they probably want you to go to 40 weeks + so the baby grows as much as possible but please don't think your baby isnt healthy. Small babies are just as healthy as big babies. and Percentiles really do s*ck!

Re: Growth Problems

I had low growth and fluids also during the last few weeks. Was ordered on bed rest and DS grew to 6lbs 7 oz by delivery, thank God. I ended up with preeclampsia in the last two weeks also so they are thinking it was some issue with blood flow. Def stay off your feet, lay on your side, drink tons of water and eat well. I gained more weight in the end but at least DS was born healthy.
