Group B Strep
Hi ladies,
I am almost 39 weeks pregnant and i tested positive for GBS.
I know it is ok because you get antibiotics during labor. However, the recommended antibiotic is penicillin and I always thought I was allergc. Now, my mom said I am not allergic but I do not want to take the chance..
I went to an allergist and he is 100% willing to give an allergy test. I spoke to a nurse at my OBGYN and she said that it should be ok to do it if I wanted to. But as I read on-line (which I should never do...lol) , many things say to not do it.
What do you think? Should I go for the allergy test or should I take the other antibiotic (vancomycin) during labor?
Has anyone who has had GBS taken other antibiotics other than penicillin?
I just want to make the right decision.
Thanls, JAckie

what's involved in the allergy test? Is it just a blood sample? that should be fine.
If it's just blood, I would go for the test - it's good to know for the future.
I break out in spontaneous hives and I got a blood test, instead of the skin test. So I do think there alternatives to allergy testing.

Its a skin test and injections... the allergist said it will not affect the baby, but I still have some reservations about it

Re: Group B Strep
im sure an alergy test for one things is fine...,my allergist told me its safe to be on allergy shots while pregnant which is a syrum of all the things ur allergic to. Of course I was too paranoid for that, but they swore it was 100% safe.
Is the 2nd choice antibiotic just as effective?

Penicillin is known to be the most effective, so I am stressed about this whole thing

Re: Group B Strep
i am pencillan and sulfur allergic - if you think you may be pencillan allergic - they should titre your blood and tell you what mdicine will work best for you that is what my ob did for me with my last preg - i only got one round of antibiotics in before my son was born and my son was fine too
as far as allergy testing - if it is a blood test i would defiently do that - if it is a scratch test it is in a minisicule amount they put under the skin - i think it would be fine
