I'd love some info too. Our taxes are nuts and we want to grieve them.

Re: Grieving Property Taxes???
You can do it yourself. If you are in Nassau, there's information on the My Nassau Property website on how to do it. It's pretty easy to do. When you grieve your taxes, you are really just trying to lower your assessed value, which will in turn lower your taxes.
I think you can figure out whether you would have a good chance of success by checking out your neighbors' assessed value. If they have similar homes and similar sized property, but their assessed value is lower than yours, you have a good chance of success. Again, in Nassau, you can easily check this out online.
If you use a company to do this for you, make sure there are no upfront fees. Usually, the company will take a cut of your savings for the first year. So if your taxes are reduced by $3K, they may take 30% of that savings. I recently sold a house where the sellers had used a law firm to grieve their taxes and they won a 20.98% reduction in their assessed value! So it may be worth it.
Just remember that when you grieve your taxes, they wil go up again each year. But at least you are lowering your base from which they will go up. Good luck!

School taxes are property taxes. When you grieve your taxes in Nassau County you are automatically grieving your County (a/k/a General) taxes AND your School taxes. If you live in an incorporated Village, you will need to file a separate grievance in that Village.
Grieving taxes is a relatively simple procedure. You can do it yourself. There are a number of companies that specialize in this - however - I would suggest using a lawyer who specializes in this type of law.
Regardless of what anyone tells you, this is a lawsuit - you are suing the taxing jurisdiction. It is not always so cut and dried.
Fees for an attorney who specializes in this field are the same as for using a tax reduction "agency" - usually 50% of the first year's savings or refund. The only upfront fees ANYONE should ask for are a $35 court filing fee.

Re: Grieving Property Taxes???
I was just about to post about this as well. I closed on my home in April. The 2009-2010 assessed value of the home was about $15,000 more than it is now. The taxes were assessed at $8800 (which is what i am currently paying) at that point. Now they are assessed at $6800. Should I grieve? Or will the taxes automatically be reduced in 2012???

I need more info:
Where is the house? I'm assuming Nassau.
When you say the house is now assessed at $6800 - I'm assuming that's the 12/13 assessment. If that's the case you should grieve - almost all Nassau County assessments for 12/13 were reduced automatically to "account for the market." They didn't drop them to market levels however.
If the house is in Suffolk and the reduction is due to a tax grievance, depending on the last year grieved, you MAY be able to file.
Just because your assessment has been reduced, do NOT expect your taxes to be reduced!!! This is a big mistake that most people make. In most cases your taxes will still INCREASE due to an increase in the tax rate!
