Re: goldendoodles?

Have you checked your local library?

That's where I went to get books on various breeds of dogs.

Re: goldendoodles?

"goldendoodles" are not a breed, therefore you will not find books on them.

not only that, they havent been around long enough to distinguish a specific temperment.

youre best bet is to get books on goldens and books on poodles and draw your own conclusions.

please adopt a goldendoodle rather than supposrt pet shops (puppymills) and backyard breeders. keep in mind no reputable breeder would ever breed this dog.

good luck.

Re: goldendoodles?

ITA with Jes. Since they are not a tested and regulated breed, the temperament are not predictable, nor is their health or genetic traits. Please do adopt a mix.

Re: goldendoodles?

As Jess said, they are not a breed but a mix of Golden Retriever and Poodle. So there won't be a book about them - and I have to agree with the fact that if you are going to get a mix...adopt a mix.

Actually there is a book about Goldendoodles, it is written by Kathryn Lee. It is really informative, I got it out of the library b/c I just got a goldendoodle.

Re: goldendoodles?

I don't want to sound rude, but since there is no lineage testing for this mix, and the breeders are not operating within breeding standards (AKC) there is no real way to tell what the temperament or genetic makeup will be of any given litter. It takes many generations to gain any consistency in breeding, which is why after 30+ years of breeding cockerpoos the AKC is just now reviewing the lineage to make them a separate breed.

There can be assumptions made, from the breeding dogs, but no guarantees.

It really cracks me up that there are people out there willing to spend big $$$ on mixed breeds. To each his/her own I guess...

Re: goldendoodles?

The first goldendoodles were back in '76. Like you said, to each his own, but this post wasn't asking anyone what there opinions were of goldendoodles just if anyone new of a book that could give her information. There are many mixed breed dogs that are fine family members, well adjusted and healthy dogs. Everyone needs to do what is right for their family and shouldnt have to feel bad about that.

if anyone wants more information about goldendoodles, there is a website called www.goldendoodles.com, which gives alot of info on the dog and info from people that have owned goldendoodles. There is information nationwide, as well as in other countries.

Re: goldendoodles?

like people have said above, if you're interested in a golden/poodle mixed breed, i would really encourage you to check out your local shelter and adopt one. BUT i realize that that was not your question!

i would check out your local petsmart or petco for info about goldendoodles. even though the goldendoodle isn't an AKC breed, there are books out on the more popular mixed breeds. this is how i found out that my dog owen, who i got from the shelter, is a "schnoodle" - i randomly saw his picture on the cover of a book!

i would just keep in mind that the info you get in such a book about the breed's look and temperament may not be what your goldendoodle is like - because in the end, it's not a standardized breed. you could get any mixture of poodle/golden characteristics.

good luck!

MrsH, Thanks! I WAS just looking for some friendly advice about goldendoodles. Although I do appreciate all the input, I wasn't really looking for opinions! Chat Icon

As was mentioned, to each his own. We have done some research already, and we do have reasons for our interest in this particular type of dog.

Thanks to those who had helpful suggestions!

Re: goldendoodles?

I wanted to add that I have a purebred dog and her tempermant is nothing like the breed standards. Having an AKC lineage doesn't guarantee anything.

It does not guarantee, of course, but since the lineage is tested there is a better chance of it being close to standard. Also if an AKC dog is going to a pet home and not a show home, there is usually a reasonChat Icon
