Going Green... Here's what the experts are saying

Some say that in the next 5 to 10 years everything will be green while others are saying that in the next 3 years the fad will be gone.....

Now do you think Green is a Fad?

Re: Going Green... Here's what the experts are saying

I watched a news program once where experts did blood tests and home tests on 1 family who eats regular food (fast food, not organic, processed, etc.) and 1 family who was "green" (only ate organic and only used green products) and there was NOT much of a difference at all. In some cases, the blood tests (testing for certain chemicals in cleaners, etc. believed to hurt us) were higher in the "green" family. That kind of threw me for a loop.

I dont think it is a fad. I think that it is good to question what is in what we use to clean our homes and what we put in our bodies. The "green" phase has made people more aware. However, after seeing that program, does it really make that much of a difference considering outside of our homes we are exposed to all the chemicals we are trying to avoid. KWIM?

My theory is that less people will eat organic in the coming years. With rising food & fuel costs, people may turn to the lower cost/non-organic option to save money.

As far as using more fuel efficient cars, being energy conscious (turning off lights, replacing old appliances with Energy Star appliances, etc), and using green building materials, etc, I think that will become the norm.

I buy green b/c organic foods leech less chemicals into the environment, so eventually we will be exposed to less chemicals in the environment-...

This doesn't surprise me. We really have no way of even knowing if things are really grown without pesticides or whatever "organic" is supposed to mean. I think a lot of times its a gimmick to try to charge people more money for the same vegetables just by putting an organic label on it. JMO

I think it's a little bit of both - trend and lifestyle change. Right now, people are concerned about waste and over consumption - partially for environmental reasons and partially for financial reasons. Some changes will last for a while and then people will start to go back to the way things were before.

In the late 70s/early 80s a lot of people were replacing gas guzzling tanks with compact cars. That lasted 20ish years before luxury cars and SUVs became super popular.

In the long run I believe comfort and convenience will prevail.

its not a fad for me but I believe some of the buzz will fade & people will go back to certain things & habits. Right now its "in" & Americans are like herd animals, as a general rule most like to do what others are doing.

I think its will be so ingrained in us shortly , it will take over and is not a fad. I hope so anyway , because money wise we are finding it hard to eat the way we want to eat right now...and its sad we have to compromise our health over it.

I think that the term Green and Going Green and all the shows are a fad, but I think that the lifestyle changes are not. When people see a difference in their wallets regarding saving energy and buying fuel efficient cars, they will stay with it. When people realize that natural cleaners work just as well and they don't get headaches from cleaning, they will stay with it.

I think it will loose a lot of the press it's getting, but I think that many of the changes that are being put in place will become habit among many.

I don't see myself going back to buying water bottles or packing groceries in plastic anytime soon.

Re: Going Green... Here's what the experts are saying

I think some of it is trend related but som e of it will stay. Energy eff appliances, reusable grocery bags, lightbulbs, building materials, and some organic food will prevail, however, paying WAY more for certain foods will fade as prices increase and pay does not. I do small things. All my light bulbs have been replaced, I have a Sigg water bottle, I use cloth grocery bags, I grow my own veggies, and would like to upgrade to energy eff appliance as we need to rebuy them. I do buy some organic foods but I also buy from farmers markets in the spring/summer/fall. Ithink that most of the fuss will pass but that in the long run it will help people understand that we need to be more conservative and waste less.

Re: Going Green... Here's what the experts are saying

I think the hype is a fad, but there are a lot of "green" things that save a lot of money in the long run. Alternative sources of energy will continue to increase, since it will save money. More efficient appliances, cars, houses, etc will be more popular, since it saves money. Companies that go green save money.

Anything that saves money will always be popular. Chat Icon

I'm getting solar panels, not primarily to "go green", although it *is* a factor, but I will save a lot of money over the life of the panels.

I'm planning on using no VOC paints, and very low VOC carpets and flooring. Again, not primarily to "go green", but I don't want my DC to breathe all those dangerous chemicals if I can help it.

Ulterior motives will keep the green movement going....

Re: Going Green... Here's what the experts are saying

I don't think its a fad. I think "green" products and lifestyles will become more affordable and available. I think the public will become more aware, and it will be ingrained in our way of living. We have already seen this happen with things such as energy star appliances. Almost everyone who buys new appliances looks for energy star, and the main reason is because it is readily available. I think more and more products will become mainstream like energy star appliances.
