Godparents..
ok, so I have a question, not sure if anyone out there can help me....
My DH and I are having our 1st baby in July. We already know that my sister will be the godmother, and he wants one of his brothers as godfather.... the Problem....
My DH and his siblings were only baptized catholic, and then his parents never went any further. SO I called 2 churches and they said that the godparents have to had made there confirmation. I know for a fact his brother wont be taking any classes, to do this.. Unfortunately he's 27 and not married and just living his life the way he wants to, but he is still my DH brother....
Has anyone ever heard of a sponsor person, where that person wouldn't be on the baptismal certificate but we would tell him that he his our child's godfather and just explain the situation to him....
We really have no one else to be the godfather, nor do we want anyone else.....

Re: Godparents..
I haven't heard of thats specifially, but I'm sure you could do that. I know there are churches that aren't as strict. Some Catholic churches won't ask for paperwork at all. I don't know if you want a specific church but if you are willing to try other churches, I would keep checking around.
If you want the specific church that I know of, you can FM (but it is Queens.)
Good luck!

Re: Godparents..
My church didn't ask for any paperwork to prove if the Godparents were baptized or received confirmation.
Let me know if you would like to know the name of my church

Re: Godparents..
in our church we needed one to be raised Catholic and the other could be a Christian Witness. Our dd's Godfather is not Catholic.

Re: Godparents..
Since my BIL was baptized "catholic" that is what he is considered.... I cant even get around that... I wish they would consider him the "witness".
That would make us sooo happy....
my sister would be the " catholic" sponsor, cause she made all her sacraments....

Re: Godparents..
in our church, only one of the godparents had to have been raised catholic. we also did not have to show any paperwork.
could you possibly look into a different church?

Re: Godparents..
Only one godparent has to be catholic and make all sacraements. The one godparent has to only fill out the paperwork. This is the rule for all RCC churches according to my Reverend. However each church is different. good luck.

My church said this same thing. Only one has to have had all of their sacraments.

Re: Godparents..
Our family is Roman Catholic. When we Baptized our DC our Church told us both GodParents had to be Confirmed. When my SIL Baptized her DS she wanted my DH and her Brother to both be GodFathers. Both were confirmed. The Church told her noshe did it anyway. Only my DH's name is on the certificate.

Re: Godparents..
He can be just a sponsor, my DH had the same problem w/his niece, he is not catholic and our niece was being baptized catholic...
SIL's sister was god mother, DH is sponser in teh church's eyes, but everywhere else it is the samething as a God Father... the catholic church just wont recognize those words, only a sponsor...
good luck!
also may depend on the priest

Re: Godparents..
OK, sooooo... I called the 2 parishes I would want to use, and spoke to the priest in each one...
what they said was technically you only need one "sponsor" who has been confirmed, my BIL can be a witness and stand up there with us and my sister, but he wont be on the baptismal certificate or bulletin. He is "catholic" , so he cant be considered a "Christian witness".
So we can explain that to him, and to us and our child he will be considered a godparent, but "officially" he wont be.....

Re: Godparents..
For my SIL's daughter, my husband is Catholic, and I am Lutheran.
We both had to prove our baptismal. But we are both on her baptismal certificate.

Re: Godparents..
right, cause you were of a different religion (which they told me is considered a "Christian witness" which is acknowledge through the church.
My BIL, is catholic (only baptized), He needs to be confirmed to be considered a godparent. and he cant be a "Christian witness" b/c he technically is catholic.
So he can stand with us, and my sister, but will not be acknowledge through the church as a sponsor/godparent, but in our hearts we will consider him a godparent...
