Giving away furniture
We have an entire bedroom set...Queen bed, two nightstands, dresser that has been in a guest room and virtually unused. I am having another baby and we will be turning that room into a nursery, so I need to get the furniture out ASAP.
I was thinking of posting on Craigslist, but it kind of freaks me out to have random people come to the house...and also, I don't want people banging up the walls, etc. It would be nice to get some cash for it, but honestly, I just want it gone....what is the best way to get rid of it? Will charity organizations come and pick it up and move it CAREFULLY down our stairs (that we are just getting painted...bad timing). I guess I'm just worried about getting it out of the house and keeping the house looking nice....
I'm in NJ.

Re: Giving away furniture
Can your DH and some of his friends move it to your garage, so if you have post it somewhere you don't need to let them in the house?
If you want to give it away I would try http://www.freecycle.org/
Or post some pics on here! Someone may want it.

Charities will not move the furniture from an upstairs (or basement) of a house. They are also picky about the condition of the furniture - It has to be in good condition.
We got rid of a full bedroom set, and an entertainment center. All of it had to be in our garage for inspection and to be moved.

Re: Giving away furniture
Call the Salvation Army or Boys and Girls Club they will come pick it up and you can get a tax form. The VNA holds a rummage sale in Bedminster, NJ in May and October and they accept furniture too. I know that they can give you a tax form as well. You could also freecycle or craigslist it and try to get $$$ for it.

My mom had the same experience--no place would move furniture up/down stairs (fear of being sued I think). You could post on here--maybe fewer crazies than craigslist!

Housing Works NYC picked up my old living room set and two dressers, carried them down from my second floor apartment. 1-888-HW-Donate

Re: Giving away furniture
Thanks everyone! It kills me to give it away since it's literally brand new, but my fear of crazies coming into my house stops me from posting on craigslist!
