Hi- I also have GD but I am going to a Endocrinologist-insurance wouldn't pay for a dietian. Are there any other helpful tips you learned. Like good snacks to have. I really appreciate any info you could pass along. Glad they got your sugar levels under control.
Thanks again

Re: Girlygrl33

Hi Maxine,
my nurse is coming over this week with a really good menu plan when I get it I will scan it for you, but in the meantime they told me protein was key. It helps break down the sugar slowly, for instance when I went to see the dietician at winthrop she gave me levels of carbs, protein and fats at each meal I am allowed to have so for instance if I am only allowed 15-30g of carbs for my snacks, thats all I was eating and the hospital dieticians told me NO NO NO that is not correct I MUST have protein along with the carbs. so instead of that 100 cal pack of chips ahoy and small apple that equals 30g of carbs that I was eating as my snack was in fact just a sugar boost increasing my levels of sugar in my pancreas- nice huh! So the snacks they gave me in the hospital were boring but they worked,
6 saltine crackers with 3 ounces of cheese
6 graham crackers with 2 tablespoons of peanut butter
two slices of turkey on wheat with lettuce with light mayo 1 pack I think thats equal to 2 tablespoons
these were the in between snacks but I can have ANY protein with a carb its the carb we have to watch out for.

snack with lunch was either a diet pudding/jello or fruit

Im not allowed a fruit in the am

NO JUICES OF ANY KIND

if you eat a bagel it can only be 1/4 of it- I know how boring but breakfast is a lot of food

I eat oatmeal, an omelette, 4 oz of milk ( watch your milk with breakfast and lunch only 4 oz but dinner have 8 oz.) a bread so either a 1/4 of a bagel, 1 slice of whole wheat, white or rye and you can put either butter, margarine, diet jelly or cream cheese -regular on it, a coffee they gave me regualr coffee 3 cups a day 8 oz with 2 creamers and 2 equals

lunch was huge too

a serving of a veggie usually 1/2 cup, a protein so 1 day I had mac and cheese with spinach, pineapple chuncks, a slice of bread with margarine, soup- thats free, a coffee and a 4oz of milk.

If you want I can photo copy all of the diet menus they gave me at the hospital I kept most of them and Im on a strict 2100 cal diet. FM your address and I will copy everything the dietician gave me too.
Its a lot and its helpful when you have the info in front of you too. Good luckChat Icon
