Girl name help....please!!

Ok so DH and i are having a really tough time. We agreed not to discuss names with anyone until we decide on a name, because people are just so critical...but you girls know this already.

ok so a current front runner is Raya. It is supposed to be pronounced "Ry-ah" not "Ray-ah". I know a girl named Raya and thats how she spells it and i like the way it is spelled. Im afraid that people will constantly mispronounce her name and she will always have to deal with correcting people (not that its the end of the world, but you know) I guess i could spell it Rya, but i for some reason like the way Raya "writes" better. What do you girls think?

Re: Girl name help....please!!

well when i first read it I automatically read it like Rh-ya because I was thinking of it like the name Maya. I am sure some people will mispronounce it but I wouldn't let that stop you from using a name you love. I think it is beautiful and it is unique!!

Ohh thats good that you read it that way. I actually asked my friend Raya and she said that about 50% of people pronounce it Ray-ah but usually after she corrects them the first time they get it.

I read it like 'Ray-a'. I think a lot of people will mispronounce the first time and hopefully they wont make the mistake again. My name is kind of different but not in a pornunciation way. People always say my name correctly but my name is spelt in a less common way. People always spell it wrong. Even at my job that I have been at 6 years people still dont spell my name right. Sometimes it gets annoying constantly correcting people but I also like that my name is a bit different. I dont know if that helped or I just rambled.

If it helps, when I first read the name I thought "Ry-ah", like you wanted. I guess because of the name Maya. Also because I'm fluent in Spanish and that's how it would be pronounced in Spanish.

My name is CONSTANTLY mispronounced and I've spent my life correcting people. I'd say 80-90% of people who see my name on paper can't pronounce it out loud. It's annoying, for sure. I personally hate it, but my DH and all my friends tell me they love it and my parents were always happy that they chose the name for me. I guess it makes me unique too. People who met me in summer camp when we were 8 will remember me because I'm the only person with that name they've ever met in their lives. Whereas, if I run into a "Jennifer" I met 20 years ago, it's not going to stick out to me, you know?

I'm going through the name dilemma now too. If you find a name you love, stick with it. Finding a name you love is a hard thing to do.

Re: Girl name help....please!!

I said it to myself "Ray - ah" ... but I know someone named Rayna, and its pronounced "Ray - nah" so that could be why.
