Ginger root...how long does it last and how do you keep it?

Ginger root...how long does it last and how do you keep it?
I have a few recipes that call for ginger root and I have been putting them off because I would only have to use it once or twice a week and I figured it would go bad. Anyone know?

I put it in a Ziploc bag and toss it in the fridge. It lasts FOREVER. At least a month. You can stick it in the freezer too.
It gets wrinkly and soft when it's no longer fresh.

Also, you can just break a small piece off at the supermarket... however much you need for the recipe - you don't need to buy the whole thing!
